  • 1. Spill Prevention and Response

  • Purpose

This module provides BMS employees and contractors with the necessary knowledge and skills to prevent, respond to, and manage spills across all BMS work sites. The training will cover the fundamentals of spill prevention, essential spill response actions, and compliance with the Company’s requirements and regulatory expectations. Each BMS site will maintain a tailored Spill Prevention and Response Plan (SPRP) in line with this training.

    Scope

This procedure applies to all BMS operations. When on a site not owned or operated by BMS, the site operator’s spill prevention program will take precedence. However, BMS guidelines remain applicable to all BMS employees and contractors on BMS-owned sites or where the operator’s program is less stringent or non-existent.

    Requirements

The following requirements ensure each BMS work site is prepared for effective spill prevention and response:

    1. Chemical Storage

    • Store chemicals in approved, spill-resistant containers.
    • Keep chemicals in closed containers and minimize exposure to stormwater.

    2. Chemical Inventory Identification

    • Access and maintain an up-to-date online Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for all site chemicals via the BMS Safety Data Sheet tab.

    3. Spill Kits

    • Ensure each site has spill kits suitable for potential spills, containing supplies for handling anticipated materials.
    • Keep spill kits accessible and inspect kit contents periodically, replenishing supplies as needed.

    4. Spill Response Supplies

    • Conduct regular inventory checks and adjust supplies to meet anticipated spill response needs.

    5. Employee Training

    • Educate employees on spill prevention and response, emphasizing available spill response materials, waste disposal practices, and communication protocols.

    6. Good Housekeeping Practices

    • Use best management practices in storage areas, including clean, organized spaces, proper labeling, and secondary containment where necessary.

    7. Communication Measures

    • Establish communication procedures for employees to follow in case of a spill, ensuring swift notification and response.

    8. Environmental Reporting

    • Report spills to environmental authorities when required, based on the material type and quantity spilled. On client sites, only respond and/or report spills with the client’s expressed and/or written consent.
  • 2. Record Keeping of Incidental Spills

  • All spills reported by BMS, regardless of size, must be documented. The electronic Spill Notification Form, accessible on the Online Safety Support Center under the Forms tab (www.bms.support), should be completed. Each record will detail the spill, response actions taken, materials involved, and any necessary follow-up. These records are securely stored online for future reference, compliance, and safety improvements.

  • 3. Seven Steps of Spill Response and Clean-Up

  • The video accompanying this training module will train employees on the seven essential steps to respond to and manage spills effectively:

    1. Assess the Situation

    • Determine the spill’s type, quantity, and potential hazards. Always prioritize personal safety and assess if specialized assistance is needed.

    2. Notify and Communicate

    • Immediately alert your supervisor and initiate communication protocols. This may involve notifying the site emergency coordinator or other relevant personnel.

    3. Secure and Contain the Area

    • Use spill containment barriers or absorbent materials to control and limit spill spread. Evacuate non-essential personnel if necessary.

    4. Don Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

    • Equip yourself with appropriate PPE based on the spill type and size to ensure safety during clean-up.
    • No not ever use PPE that you have not been trained on, such as respiratory protection.

    5. Clean Up the Spill

    • Follow established clean-up procedures, utilizing spill kits and absorbent materials specific to the chemicals involved. Use secondary containment when necessary.
    • Do not ever clean up a spill that you have not been adequatly trained for as per the requirements of the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). This includes training on the PPE, respiratory protection, and equipment such as air monitors.

    6. Dispose of Waste Properly

    • Dispose of all spill-related waste according to Company waste disposal procedures. Ensure adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations.

    7. Document and Report

    • Complete the Spill Notification Form, detailing the spill, response actions, and materials involved. Record the clean-up efforts for future review and safety improvement.
  • Conclusion and Review

  • Note: This training is designed to prepare employees and contractors to actively prevent spills and to respond safely and effectively when they occur. Please note that additional training on the specific Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other equipment required for spill clean-up, as indicated in the Safety Data Sheets (SDS), must be completed separately from this module.

Adhering to these practices is essential to maintaining BMS’s commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
