Background Check

As standard to adoption applications - we conduct a background check on all interested participants to ensure that all members of the home do not have a criminal history involving animal cruelty/neglect. You are not penalized for speeding tickets, misdemeanors, or if you got into the wrong crowd 10+ years ago (except animal cruelty cases). You may contact us ahead of time should there be something that needs to be discussed. In addition, we do verify if you own your property through the County Auditor. 

We do adopt to renters depending on dogs we may have that would do well in an apartment or per pet policy if you're looking to adopt a different animal. If we don't think a dog would do well in an apartment, there is a very good reason for it. However, we're open to discuss alternative solutions. Renters MUST provide a copy of their lease stating limits for owning pets on the property which can be emailed at comingbackhomerescue@outlook.com**

Starting 9/25/25: If you do not send in your lease or contact us in regards to your leasing agreement, we will NOT reach out to you. It has been instructed for applicants to do so and we cannot be responsible for those who do not read carefully. We have to assume you're not allowed animals. 

All questions are standard questions on our application that you would see from rescue to rescue. Please answer them honestly. 

Why we background check?
Doing a background check on our applicants have not been anything new. However, we are now being more direct and open about the process for transparency purposes for the new year. Our goal is to ensure dogs are being placed in safe environments and reduce the chances of dogs becoming abandoned or used in illegal activities. 

Veterinarian Reference Check 

The second part of our application review process is to get a veterinarian reference from the clinic you use for the pets in your home. This is also very standard for most if not all rescues/shelter. If for some reason you do not have one, please let us know. (If you don't have pets - we will already excuse the missing information). A holistic approach for pets is acceptable.

What are we looking for?
Veterinarian comfirms pets are vaccinated, spayed/neutered, was last seen within the year, and are given Heartworm Preventative.

For exotic animals, we understand that exotic vets are not widly available. This may be covered during your interview or meet to discuss options or preventative measures at home. This varies per animal. 

IMPORTANT: 
Please call your veterinarian to allow Coming Back Home Rescue to do a record inquiry (let them know you are looking to adopt a dog and we will be doing a Veterinarian Reference Check). If we cannot access your vet, you will be notified before being declined. Alternativly, you can also provide their latest records.
