  • Step 3: Species

  • Texas Mesquite

Janka Hardness Rating 2345 (View Hardness Chart)

     Pros:

    • Durability: It is extremely hard with a Janka Rating of 2345 and is one of the most stable woods used in the construction industry.
    • Design Versatility: Texas Mesquite is a red-toned wood with moderate color variation and large amounts of grain variation. Available in live sawn only. Mesquite is only available in one grade: Rustic. Texas Mesquite is inherently very rustic and utilizes the entire tree.
    • Sustainability: Not available in FSC-certified. Woodwright can produce Mesquite with FloorScore certification and include HPDv2.3 as required.
    • Availability: Limited
    • Plank Sizes: Our engineered planks are produced in “5/8” x 5” x 5’- 8’ long boards, much longer than the 9” to 48” offerings found in most solid Mesquite flooring, making it faster to install. The 4mm face lamella is made from multiple face pcs ranging from 9” – 48” long.
Typical engineered structures are 5/8” x 4mm wear layers.

    Cons:

    • Only available in Rustic Grade with higher-than-average allowable knots and cracks.
    • Limited availability and premium price point.
    • Short lengths – 48” max, making it difficult to produce treads and nosings.
    • 1000 SF minimum order and longer lead times due to the production process.

    Color:

    • Mesquite is naturally Red in color and deepens over time with Patina. Even when stained or bleached, it still showcases a hint of red tones.
    • Texas Mesquite is a red-toned wood with moderate color variation and large amounts of grain variation.
    • Character marks are filled with colored epoxy (typically black)
  • White Oak

Janka Hardness Rating 1360 (View Hardness Chart)

     Pros:

    • Durability: This timeless American favorite is one of the most stable and durable of all the Oaks and is perfect for commercial spaces.
    • Design Versatility: Prized for its wide array of grain patterns. Available in plain sawn, rift cut, quartersawn, rift and quartered mixed and live sawn.
    • Sustainability: As the most popular species used in commercial flooring, White Oak from Woodwright can include multiple sustainability attributes.
Available in FSC certified, Floorscore certified, and is covered under our HPDv2.3.
    • Availability: Readily available except for Rift cut (lineal straight grain pattern) due to high demand and limited supply of Rift lumber.
    • Plank Sizes: Engineered 3”-12” widths and lengths ranging from 18”- 96” standard or 2’-12’ long length.
Typical engineered structures are 5/8” x 4mm or 3/4" x 4mm or 6mm wear layers. Widths over 8” should be specified as 3/4" for stability

    Cons:

    • None!

    Color:

    • White Oak ranges from a light, honey-colored sapwood to a rich golden-brown heartwood. Truly beautiful with a clear finish or can be stained in any color.
    • White Oaks' inherent open grain takes stain extremely well and serves to increase the overall wearability.
  • European Oak

Janka Hardness Rating 1360 (View Hardness Chart)

     Pros:

    • Durability: Much like American Oak, it is a perfect species for commercial applications. It tends to be stronger and expands and contracts less than American Oak.
    • Design Versatility: European Oak is highly prized for its beautiful natural taupe tone, unique grain pattern produced by the Live Sawn cutting technique, and its versatility of finishing processes. Available in live sawn only. European Oak is available in multiple grades: select, rustic, and light rustic.
    • Sustainability: Available in FSC-certified, Floorscore-certified, and is covered under our HPDv2.3.
    • Availability: Readily available.
    • Plank Sizes: Engineered 3”-12” widths and lengths ranging from 18”- 96” standard or 2’-12’ long lengths.
      Typical engineered structures are 5/8” x 4mm and 3/4" x 4mm or 6mm wear layers.

    Cons:

    • Difficult to find in lumber and veneers. Prime grade is limited in availability.

    Color:

    • European Oak has a higher tannin content than American Oak; it can be stained more easily and with more consistency than American Oak.
    • Known for its beautiful natural taupe tone
  • Pecan Hickory

Janka Hardness Rating 1820 (View Hardness Chart)

     Pros:

    • The National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) does not make a distinction between Pecan and Hickory lumber during grading, thus Woodwright markets them as a combined Pecan Hickory species.
    • Durability: As one of the hardest North American species, Pecan Hickory is one of the most popular and durable species selected for wood flooring, walls, and stairs
    • Design Versatility: Known for high contrast between heartwood and sapwood, which creates an application that commands attention in any application. Available in plain sawn only. Pecan is available in multiple grades: select, rustic, and light rustic. Hickory/Pecan features distinct characteristics such as inconsistent character marks, cathedrals, and grain patterns that make this hardwood very desirable.
    • Sustainability: As the second most popular specie used for commercial wood flooring and stairs, Pecan Hickory from Woodwright can include multiple sustainability attributes.
Available in FSC-certified, Floorscore-certified, and is covered under our HPDv2.3.
    • Availability: Readily available.
    • Plank Sizes: Engineered in 3”- 8” widths and lengths ranging from 18”- 96” standard or 2’-12’ long lengths.
Typical engineered structures are 5/8” x 4mm or 3/4" x 4mm, or 6mm wear layers. Widths over 7” should be specified as engineered 3/4” thick for stability.

    Cons:

    • Stability can be a concern. We recommend 5” max widths and being conscious of the environmental conditions at your project location.
    • Only available in Plain Sawn cut.
    • Large amount of natural color variation.

    Color:

    • Colors range from white sapwood to dark reddish-brown heartwood.
    • The bold calico colors make a statement, especially when a clear finish is used, however that can be subdued with most stain colors.
  • Walnut

Janka Hardness Rating 1010 (View Hardness Chart)

    Pros:

    • Durability: Walnut is a rather dimensionally stable material with low expansion and contraction characteristics. It carries a Janka Hardness Rating of 1010, making it one of the softer species typically used for wood floors. Woodwright often recommends substituting Pecan, White Oak, or Sapele, stained a Walnut color, for increased wearability.
    • Design Versatility: Prized for its wide array of grain patterns. Available in plain sawn and quartered (lineal grain). Walnut comes in various grades: select, rustic, and light rustic.
    • Sustainability: Walnut from Woodwright can include multiple sustainability attributes.
Available in FSC-certified, Floorscore-certified, and is covered under our HPDv2.3.
    • Availability: Readily available
    • Plank Sizes: Engineered 3”-10” widths and lengths ranging from 18”- 96” standard or 2’-12’ long lengths.
Typical engineered structures are 5/8” x 4mm and 3/4" x 4mm or 6mm wear layers. Widths over 7” should be specified as 3/4" for stability

    Cons:

    • Woodwright does not recommend Walnut in heavy traffic environments as it is more susceptible to high heel dents than most other species.
    • Sapwood is allowed in Walnut, which can be an undesirable trait.

    Color:

    • Walnut’s coloration is a harmonious blend of sandy brown to dark chocolate, with light sapwood streaks.
    • Dark coloration, rich tones, fine smooth finish, and lustrous depth.
  • Post Oak

Janka Hardness Rating 1360 (View Hardness Chart)

     Pros:

    • Durability: Increased stability and hardness make Post Oak a perfect choice for commercial spaces with a casual aesthetic.
    • Design Versatility: With every grain swirl, knot, beige streak, and darker speckle, Post Oak tells its own story in great detail. 100% locally sourced and manufactured in a mill run grade that is chock-full of character. Available in live sawn only. Post Oak is only available in one grade: Rustic. Its distinction comes from its inherent beauty found in the naturally occurring color variations and less pronounced grain pattern. It is very different than any other Oak.
    • Sustainability: Not available in FSC-certified. Woodwright can produce Post Oak with FloorScore certification and include HPDv2.3 as required.
    • Limited  Availability: Texas Post Oak is a salvaged wood mainly found in the Brazos Valley of Texas
    • Plank Sizes: Engineered in 3”-12” widths and lengths ranging up to 12’ long.
      Typical engineered structures are 5/8” x 4mm and 3/4" x 4mm or 6mm wear layers.

    Cons:

    • Only available in Rustic Grade with higher-than-average allowable knots and cracks.
    • Limited availability and premium price point.

    Color:

    • Moderate color variation with sapwood allowed
    • Character marks are filled with colored epoxy (typically black)
  • Sapele

Janka Hardness Rating 1500 (View Hardness Chart)

     Pros:

    • Durability: Sapele is a stable, medium-textured, and moderately dense exotic hardwood that is excellent for wood flooring applications. Terrific substitute to Walnut at 50% harder.
    • Design Versatility: A rich, lustrous, exotic hardwood, Native to tropical Africa, also referred to as West African Mahogany.
Available in 2 cuts: Ribbon Striped (Vertical grain) or Mixed Grain (mix of plain sawn and vertical grain). Grade is referred to as prime import quality (PIQ), which is free of knots and sapwood.
    • Sustainability: Sapele from Woodwright can include multiple sustainability attributes. Available in FSC-certified and Floorscore-certified, and is covered under our HPDv2.3.
    • Availability: Readily available. (Other exotic species available include: Wenge, Teak, Santos Mahogany, and Zebrawood)
    • Plank Sizes: Engineered 3”-7” widths and lengths ranging from 18”- 96” standard or 2’-12’ long lengths.
Typical engineered structures are 5/8” x 4mm and 3/4" x 4mm or 6mm wear layers. Widths over 7” should be specified as 3/4" for stability.

    Cons:

    • Red colored species, often not hidden without a darker stain.

    Color:

    • It features golden to dark reddish-brown coloring that is often more consistent than that of other Mahogany species.
    • Sapele features a fine interlocking grain that is sometimes wavy, creating a uniform texture with beautiful natural luster.
