    INTRODUCTION

You are being asked to be in a research study of parents of 2e learners. This study is being conducted online. This study is being conducted by: Karen Arnstein, Ed.D., Core Faculty at Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education (BGS) and Barry Gelston, Ed.D., Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity in Education (BGS) Alumni.

Each Zoom interview will be conducted in an open-ended, semi-structured interview style to allow for discussion and reflection. Participants will be sent the interview questions in advance so they can consider memories that they would want to share with the researchers. If the participant asks, or is visibly upset, the researcher will ask if they need to take a break or want to end the interview.

Each Zoom interview will be recorded, stored in the Zoom cloud, transcribed using Otter.ai, and stored with pseudonyms in a secure, password protected, online location. Each participant will receive a cleaned copy of the full transcript and an executive summary to review for accuracy for member checking purposes before the transcript is uploaded into Dedoose, a secure, online qualitative data analysis tool. Once member checking has been completed, Zoom recordings will be deleted.

Only the researchers will have access to the transcripts, executive summaries, Zoom recordings, and login information.

You were selected as a possible participant because you were referred by a shared acquaintance or you responded to the recruitment flyer as a parent of a twice-exceptional student and you have met the inclusion criteria for this study. Please read this consent form and ask any questions you have before agreeing to be in the study.

    PROCEDURES:

If you decide to participate, please sign the Jotform below, indicating your consent to participate. If you have been selected as meeting the inclusion criteria, one of the researchers will contact you to schedule an interview date.

Participants will be asked to engage in one or more private online interviews lasting no longer than 60 minutes. Interviews will explore the participants’ experience parenting a twice-exceptional child. Follow-up interviews and/or emails may be conducted if agreed upon. The interviews will be recorded and transcribed. This information will be stored in a secure, password protected location.

    COMPENSATION/INCENTIVES:

There is no compensation for participation in this study.

The records of this study will be kept private and your confidentiality will be protected. In any sort of report the researcher(s) might publish, no identifying information will be included.

Research records will be stored securely and only the researcher(s) will have access to the records. All data will be kept in the master file listing the names of participants, dates of signed consent forms, interview dates, and user identification codes (UICs) will be stored on a password protected, encrypted server and only accessible by the investigators.

Any study records that identify you will be kept confidential to the extent possible by law. All study records, including approved IRB documents, tapes, transcripts, and consent forms, will be destroyed by shredding and/or deleting after 3 years.

We will protect the confidentiality of your research records by using pseudonyms. Your name and any other information that can directly identify you will be stored separately from the data collected as part of the project.

It is possible that other people may need to see the information we collect about you. These people may include administration at BGS, the co-investigator, Barry Gelston, Ed.D., and the BGS Institutional Review Board (IRB).

We will keep your research data to use for future research and publications. Your name and other information that can directly identify you will be kept secure and stored separately from the research data collected as part of the project.

    VOLUNTARY NATURE OF THE STUDY:

Participation in this study is voluntary and requires your informed consent. Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relations with Bridges Graduate School or the SPIRE Research Institute. If you decide to participate, you are free to skip any question that is asked. You may also withdraw from this study at any time without penalty.
