  • Stage of Development

The maturity of an innovation can be described by its Technology Readiness Level (TRL). Please select the stage of development. Select any option to see a more detailed explanation below.

  • Please indicate the stage of development.*
  • TRL 1: Idea

The principles of the innovation have been hypothesized but no experimental proof is available yet.

  • TRL 2: Concept development

The principles of the innovation seem feasible based on observations. Research plans and protocols have been developed. However, assumptions are not yet supported by any practical proof or detailed analysis.

  • TRL 3: Applied research

Analytical and laboratory studies have been completed. Parameters of interest have been measured and compared with analytical predictions. The initial proof-of-concept and hypotheses have been tested.

  • TRL 4: Technical development

The basic aspects of the innovation have been integrated or assimilated to establish that the pieces will work together. The hypotheses have been refined.

  • TRL 5: Lab-scale model development and validation

A small-scale prototype or model of the innovation has been validated under relevant operational conditions mimicked in the laboratory. The hypotheses have been validated.

  • TRL 6: Pilot model development and validation

A representative prototype or model has been tested in the intended environment and is close to the expected performance. Phase 1 trials have been completed (where applicable).

  • TRL 7: System prototype development and validation

A fully-functional prototype or model has been demonstrated in the actual operational environment at pre-commercial scale.

  • TRL 8: Product testing and validation

The innovation has been proven to work in final form, under expected conditions and tested to see if it meets design and user specifications.

  • TRL 9: Finalisation of deployment

The innovation has been proven and is ready for full commercial deployment.
