What is Mentorship?

The University of St. Michael's College (USMC) Mentorship program is an Campus Life initiative that helps first year students make the successful transition to university life and the USMC community through mentor relationships with senior students. The program is seeking two (2) student Coordinators to develop and lead the 2024/25 mentorship program year. 

This is a hands-on opportunity for someone interested in gaining experience with:

• Peer mentorship
• Leadership development
• Managing a team of approximately 50-70 peers
• Community partnerships
• Student life initiatives

Position Description

For the 2025/2026 year, the mentorship program aims to support as many first year students as possible throughout summer online mentorship and up to approximately 300 first year student mentees in person during the school year. The Coordinators will be responsible for managing a team of 6 Senior Mentors and up to 70 Mentors. As leaders of the program, the Coordinators will help:

• contribute to program strategy and development
• supervise the Senior Mentor activity portfolios (Internal Affairs, Communications and Event Coordinators)
• oversee general mentor relationship progress
• interview and hire Mentors and Senior Mentors
• manage mentee application process
• assign mentorship groupings
• ensure completion of team training
• ensure successful operation of program events
• organize and lead team meetings
• implement program evaluation
• represent the program within the larger university environment
• collaborate with the Orientation Coordinators to contribute to Orientation initatives to welcome first year students (eg. hiring Mentor-Leaders, hosting Mentorship Orientation)

A strong candidate is someone who:

• has a passion to serve their fellow students
• has previous leadership experience to lean on, whether this is in their community, the University, their highschool or somewhere else
• must be enrolled as a student at the University of Toronto with a minimum CGPA of 2.5
• must be entering at least their second year of undergraduate studies
• *Any previous experience planning and facilitating events/initiatives is an asset
• *Previous experience with the mentorship program at St. Michael's an asset

Training & Expectations

In this role, Coordinators are student representatives of USMC and are expected to uphold the mission and values of the University.

The Coordinators will be supported by the Campus Life Coordinator in their leadership of the program throughout the year, which begins immediately following their selection. Please be aware that before September 2025, the Coordinators’ availability will be required for involvement in the following activities:

Spring-Summer Expectations

• Attend a spring Transition meeting
• Contribute to program strategy and development
• Weekly meetings beginning in March
• Attend St. Michael's College Leadership Retreat Training (May overnight)
• Divisional training with Campus Life Coordinator
• Participation in LEAD Training (including SafeTalk)
• Interview/hire and supervise Senior Mentor portfolios
• Interview and hire mentor leaders
• Manage mentee application process and groupings
• Co-coordinate summer e-mentorship
• Plan and facilitate Mentorship Orientation
  Monthly Time Commitment: 20-24 hours

 Fall-Winter Expectations

• Supervise the Senior Mentor activity portfolios (Internal Affairs, Communications, Event Coordinators)
• Co-facilitate bi-weekly senior mentor team meetings
• Implement systems of program evaluation
• Represent the program within the larger university environment (welcome days etc.)
• Attend weekly team meetings (8 hours/month)

Monthly Time Commitment: 10-15 hours

Mentorship Coordinator Renumeration

This position will begin February 2025, and end April 30, 2026.
