Molly Freedenberg will tell the good, bad, and the ugly about her 20 years of communal living, from rural Oregon to urban San Francisco to a monastery in Italy. She'll give tips about what to consider before starting or joining a commune, and how to avoid common pitfalls if you decide to do it.
Molly is a disabled writer, artist, and activist who has spent her life moving within and between various subcultures and is passionate about: 1) the community and utility of underground movements, but also 2) the importance of being intentional and vigilant about the opportunities for abuse of power and exploitation of marginalized peoples within them. Before she became housebound with ME/CFS, she was a dancer, arts nonprofit administrator, event producer, multi-commune founder and/or member, Burning Man devotee (and then defector), and journalist, most recently as Culture Editor at the now-defunct indie weekly, the San Francisco Bay Guardian. She writes the Substack Well, Actually, and is working on a memoir about her experience living at the art monastery in Italy.
