EVFAC addresses the critical gap in arts education by engaging youth in hands-on creativity and in preserving cultural heritage through fiber arts. The Youth Fiber Studio initiative targets both local teachers in schools with little or no arts funding as well as youth interns to lead after-school and summer camp weaving programs.
At this time, to apply for this training you MUST be either:
- A current public school teacher near Española, Taos, Santa Fe, or Los Alamos
- A young adult aged 18-24 interested in teaching (preference given to those affiliated with partner organizations)
Program Overview
The rigid heddle loom, with its approachable design and versatility, provides an accessible introduction to weaving for students of all skill levels.
EVFAC in Española is proud to offer a comprehensive paid 15-hour teacher training program that takes place over two full days. Participants are paid $15 an hour and will receive ongoing support after the training is complete.
Training Details
During the 2-day training, teachers will learn the fundamental skill of warping a rigid heddle loom and will create five small distinct sample pieces (which they can finish outside of the training). These samples will showcase various patterns and techniques that are achievable on the rigid heddle loom, serving also as valuable teaching tools for classroom instruction.
Educational Implementation
The program is specifically designed for implementation in grades 5 through 12, making weaving accessible to a wide range of students. The techniques and patterns learned during the training are carefully selected to be age-appropriate and engaging for these grade levels.
Equipment Provision
Upon successful completion of both the training and sample pieces, current public school teachers will be equipped with everything needed to begin teaching weaving immediately. This includes a complete set of rigid heddle looms, all necessary hand tools, and a supply of both yarn and warp material. This comprehensive package comes at no cost to teachers or schools, and ensures a smooth transition from training to classroom implementation without any additional preparation or materials needed.
Youth instructors will be matched with afterschool programs, assistantships with current teachers, and will be eligible to teach at EVFAC during our annual summer camp in June.
