      A: An API key is like a digital passcode that allows two different systems to talk to each other. When you give an API key to another service, you’re essentially saying, “I trust you to use my account without asking me for my login each time.”

       

      Q: Why should I keep it private?

      A: Your API key can give full access to your Shelterluv account. If it’s shared with the wrong person or system:

      • They could view data without your knowledge.
      • They might access sensitive information about your shelter, adopters, or donors.
      • Because activity is tied to the key, not a person, it’s hard to track who did what if something goes wrong.

       

      Q: What are the Best Practices I should follow?

      A: You should:

      • Keep your API key private - treat it like a password.
      • Only share it with partners you trust and that you want connected to Shelterluv.
      • Rotate (regenerate) your API key if you think it’s been exposed.
      • Disable or delete keys that are no longer needed.

      The API Specifications Documentation is a technical document for developers to use when building an integration, such as a custom web display. You will not need the specifications documentation for existing integrations like Adopt a Pet or Petco Love Lost.

    • You'll receive a link to the documentation via email when your API key is generated.
      You can share the link with additional individuals working on your project.

      When you share your API key, you are granting that third party access to data in your Shelterluv account. This includes sensitive information such as adopter names, contact details, and other personally identifiable information (PII).

      Once access is granted, the third party’s privacy and data policies apply, not Shelterluv’s. Depending on their policies, they may:
