  • 2025 BARBARA J. MITCHELL JEFFERSON BOOK AWARD APPLICATION: One - $550 Award

    The Friends for Life Foundation, Inc. (FFLF) is organized exclusively for the purpose of charitable, religious, educational, and scientific endeavors. FFLF supports quality of life improvement for the disadvantaged, and financially assist individuals and organizations in our community that enhance education, family, health, economic empowerment, and the arts. The Friends for Life Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of our annual book award, the Barbara J. Mitchell Jefferson Book Award. One - $550 Book Award will be presented to a student based on academic achievement, leadership, and character.  
  • The Barbara J. Mitchell Jefferson Book Award is available to female or male students. Applicants must meet all the eligibility requirements and the deadline to qualify. The recipient will be recognized at the Friends for Life Foundation, Inc., Heart of Giving Luncheon in November 2025. 

    Eligibility for the book award:

    • Male or female high school senior graduating from a North Fulton high school OR a 2024 Strands of Elegance Cotillion Debutante or Escort residing outside of North Fulton County, 

    • Plan to attend a two or four-year college or university in the Fall of 2024.

    • Earned at least a 2.7 cumulative grade point average.

     The Barbara J. Mitchell Scholarship Fund does not discriminate by age, race, color, national origin, disability, creed, or gender.

  • ABOUT BARBARA J. MITCHELL JEFFERSON

    Ms. Shevawn Broxton Young, a member of the Friends for Life Foundation, Inc. and the current FFLF President, established the Barbara J. Mitchell Jefferson Book Award in memory of her mother. Ms. Mitchell Jefferson was a native of Tampa, Florida, and a lifelong learner who understood the importance and value of education. She earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education from Florida A& M University before earning an additional advanced degree and certifications from Wayne State University. During her 39 years in Education, Ms. Jefferson served as a teacher (in the US and internationally), guidance counselor, and principal of three schools. Before retiring she was the founding principal of the awarding-winning A. Leon Lowery Elementary School, named after family friend, Civil Rights activist, and Tampa’s first African American School Board Member. 

  • In 2025, one - $550 Friends for Life Foundation, Inc. Book Award will be given to a high school senior in memory of Ms. Barbara J. Mitchell Jefferson.

    • REQUIRED RULES FOR APPLICANTS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE BOOK AWARD SELECTION PROCESS  
    • Applicants for the Barbara J. Mitchell Jefferson Book Award must meet all eligibility requirements as defined in the respective application.

      Selection criteria or other data used in evaluating applicants will not be shared with them, their parents or any other persons who are not members of the selection process.

      Relatives or associates of the applicant or their family will not be allowed to participate in the application review, interview, or selection process.

      The applicant and parents agree to respect the integrity of the process and the members of the Selection Committee. All candidates will be evaluated fairly and equitably.

      The book award is a one-time award and is non-renewable.

      • The Barbara J. Mitchell Jefferson Book Award was established to provide financial assistance towards books for the first year at a college or university. The Book Award is $550. 

      • All applications must be submitted on time and all applications must include the 500 word to one-page maximum essay about an African American teacher or author who has inspired you and why. (NO EXCEPTIONS).

      Deadline to submit the application and essay is JUNE 30, 2025.
