Join Climate Action Families for a spectacular clear view of the Milky Way, under a flaming shower of meteors! CAF has been invited to view the 2026 Perseid Meteor Shower from a very special space in southern WA state where the treasured dark skies have been protected. We are hosting a FREE family-friendly campout from Sat, August 15 to Sun, August 16 (with options for arriving early or staying late). This occasion is one of the most magical annual events, and we can’t wait to share the wonder together!
We know it's a trek—with stops, it's about 4 hours—but we expect this will be a very memorable event. If you want to come, we will work with you to make it possible! Equipment and transportation support is available.
Options for camping:
- Early Option: CAF families and friends are welcome to join on Friday August 14, but there will be no structured programming.
- Saturday-Sunday: From 11AM Sat to 11AM Sun, CAF will coordinate light activities and discussions, and provide shared supper on Saturday (food details to come).
- Late Option: You also have the option to extend your stay through Sunday night, for a third night of unprogrammed stargazing. Recreation options include bringing outdoor toys for the camping area; hiking up to nearby hill with a great view; bringing bikes, though the road may be bumpy; exploring the wider area; chatting with local astronomy buffs, and relaxing at the campsite for a second night of meteor magic.
Saturday activities:
- Set up camp together and learn vital skills for outdoor adventuring
- Tour Goldendale’s state of the art observatory to learn more about the stars (and to beat the daytime heat!)
- Return to camp in cooler temperatures, play games, share a meal together, and get ready for the show!
- Enjoy uncommon views of the night sky (only red lights allowed!) as the Perseid meteor phenomenon unfolds
- Hear from resident astronomy experts and try out their tools and telescopes
- Learn how to help advocate for dark-skies preservation
- Enjoy the peace and quiet of a remote campsite with friends, family and your climate community!
