    The Green Cities Foundation is a private foundation with a mission to connect plants and people for a greener, healthier urban climate. Established by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) in 2018, the Foundation is dedicated to protecting, nurturing, and growing urban greenspaces for the health and well-being of all.

    • Grow: We commit to expanding greenspaces, and people’s participation in them, across Canada.

    About the Community Greenspace Grant:
    This new grant program supports the creation and restoration of urban greenspaces across Canada. The program aims to provide resources and funding to bring meaningful green infrastructure to communities, enhancing resilience, biodiversity, and overall well-being. Eligible spaces include parks, community gardens, playgrounds, sports fields, and open public spaces.

    Grant Details:

    • Grant Amount: Up to $150,000
    • Eligibility: This grant is for greenspace projects that will be completed in 2025. Projects must be located in Toronto, Calgary, or Montreal (and surrounding areas).
    • The grant provides up to 50% matching funds through cash, in-kind material, and/or labour donations to support selected projects.
    • Each project will be evaluated based on its alignment with our mission and the benefits it brings to the local community.

    Greenspaces are vital for creating healthier and more resilient communities by:

    • Slowing down climate change through storing away carbon
    • Managing stormwater areas to prevent flooding
    • Providing local wildlife with habitat essential to their survival
    • Increasing individual mental and physical well-being

    Applications will be reviewed on a first come, first serve basis.

  • Obligations of 2025 Grant Recipients:


    Funding Contribution: The grant, offering funding up to $150,000, will support up to 50% of project costs through cash contributions and/or in-kind donations of labor and materials. Projects will be evaluated based on their merits and alignment with the mission of the Green Cities Foundation.

    Celebratory Activity/Event: Grant recipients are required to organize a celebratory activity or event to showcase their project. This can be part of an existing event or a standalone occasion. Green Cities Foundation will provide guidelines and suggestions for this activity.

    Social Media Engagement: Recipients are expected to promote their projects through social media posts, using the designated program hashtag (to be announced) and tagging @gcfoundation and its grant partners.

    Application Review and Awarding: Applications will be evaluated based on their alignment with GCF's mission and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Project Completion Timeline: Recipients must complete their projects within the 2025 calendar year. Failure to complete the project within this timeframe may result in the cancellation of the grant funding.

    Project Updates and Documentation: Recipients are required to regularly document the progress of their project by providing regular updates with the GCF Project Coordinator, along with photos and videos showcasing key milestones and the overall development of the greenspace.

    Final Report: Recipients must complete a detailed final report as a condition for the release of funds. To facilitate this, recipients are expected to keep accurate records of key project metrics, including volunteer participation, the number of plants and shrubs planted, receipts, and other relevant data.

    Recognition Signage: Grant recipients will be required to provide signage acknowledging the Green Cities Foundation’s contribution to their project, as well as recognizing our grant partners. Specific details and requirements for the signage will be provided at a later stage.

  • TERMS AND CONDITIONS*

  • 1. To use the funds only for the designated purpose as described in the grant application and subsequent grant notification letter and not for any other purpose without Green Cities Foundations prior written approval.

    2. To notify Green Cities Foundations immediately of any change in (a) Organization’s legal or tax status, (b) Organization’s executive or key staff responsible for achieving the grant purposes, (c) Organization’s ability to expend the grant for the intended purpose, and (d) any expenditure from this grant for any purpose other than those for which the grant was intended.

    3. To not expend any grant funds for any political or lobbying activity or for any purpose other than the one specified in this application.

    4. To allow Green Cities Foundation to review and approve the content of any proposed publicity concerning this grant prior to its release and to recognize Green Cities Foundation in all publicity materials related to the funded project or program, as specified in the grant notification letter.

    5. To allow Green Cities Foundation to include information about this grant in Green Cities Foundations e-newsletter, annual reports, news releases, social media postings, and website.  This includes the amount and purpose of the grant, any photographs you have provided, your logo or trademark, and other information and materials about your organization and its activities.

    6. To submit a final report summarizing the project promptly following the end of the period during which you are to use all grant funds and to submit any interim reports that Green Cities Foundation may require.  Your reports should describe your progress in achieving the purposes of the grant and include a detailed accounting of the use and expenditure of grant funds. 

    Green Cities Foundation reserves the right to discontinue, modify or withhold any payments under this grant award or to require a total or partial refund of any grant funds if, in Green Cities Foundations sole discretion, such action is necessary: (a) because you have not fully complied with the terms and conditions of this grant; (b) to protect the purpose and objectives of the grant or any other charitable activities of Green Cities Foundation; or (c) to comply with the requirements of any law or regulation applicable to you, Green Cities Foundation, or this grant.
