The Coastal Hazards, Equity, Economic Prosperity, & Resilience (CHEER) project is a large-scale, NSF-funded research hub dedicated to understanding the complex issues facing households, communities, policymakers, and other stakeholders as they plan for and recover from hurricanes. Our Summer Scholars program is an investment in the next generation of researchers. In the program's third year, we will foster inquiry and broaden the participation of undergraduate students in disaster science, policy, and practice. Participants will collaborate across disciplines and learn about hurricane planning and recovery from leading researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. Our goals are to improve community and individual outcomes with a focus on equity and inclusion. The Summer Scholars program is a six-week residential research opportunity with a virtual, asynchronous orientation, in-person residential site visits, and collaborative research from May 27th through July 3rd in Greenville, North Carolina, at East Carolina University. After the program, participants will be supported in translating their work into research products. Participants will receive a $6000 stipend and housing (university apartments) and travel will be covered. We seek applicants who bring their discipline-based knowledge and curiosity to consider co-creating knowledge with practitioners, policymakers, and private sector stakeholders to improve community, household, and individual resiliency. While participating in the program, you will be (1) part of a cohort of students working on your CHEER-related research project, (2) matched with a CHEER faculty mentor who will provide guidance and support for your work, (3) receive training for your research project as part of the cohort team, (4) travel to communities and meet with practitioners and policymakers in Eastern North Carolina, (5) develop networks with your peers and leading scholars, and (6) present the results of your research to the CHEER team at end of the 6-week program. We will work with you to develop a project that aligns with the broad goals of the CHEER project and your interests. Your project will inform the ongoing CHEER research and positively impact people and communities impacted by hurricanes, wind, and flooding. Applications are due by midnight EST Friday, February 14th.
