How it works:
Above is a video with my arrangement of the Doobie Brothers tune Listen To The Music, one of my favorite tunes from the 1970s. Hidden in the video are seventeen well-known bass clarinet orchestral excerpts. SEVENTEEN. Some are easy to find, some are more ...challenging. All of these are common excerpts for auditions — and none are needlessly obscure, I swear. (In January, once the challenge is over, I'll post the arrangement with the excerpts VERY LOUD and you'll hear 'em.)
NOTE: some of the excerpts have had a few notes modified to match the key of this Doobie Brothers tune. Otherwise the arrangement would sound like crap. Gotta be true to the Doobies.
Entries are time-stamped, and the first person to correctly identify all of 17 excerpts will win their choice of the three prizes below; the second person to do so will win their choice of the remaining two prizes (i.e., one of those the first prize winner did not select); the third person will win the remaining prize.
Prizes:
If you don't get 'em all, you still might win something!
If you are one of the first 20 entries to correctly identify between 12-16 of the excerpts (but not 17, or you’d be in the top three!), you will win an Earspasm Fun Pack, which will include stickers and other accessories we make in-house. It’ll be good, I promise.
What if no one gets 'em all?
I'll draw three names randomly from the pile of people that got between 12-16 right and those three will get the grand prizes! Woot woot!
Okay, here's what you need to do:
When you listen to the video, and you hear an orchestral excerpt, make note of the time (minutes:seconds) in the video where you hear that excerpt BEGIN. Along with that time, fill out the form with the name of the orchestral piece, the movement name or number the excerpt is from (if applicable, otherwise write “N/A”) and the composer of the piece.
The Excerpt Challenge starts December 14 and ends January 12th. Winners will be contacted on January 14th, right after Low Clarinet Fest, and the results will be announced on Earspasm’s social channels.
Note, the competition is open ONLY to US citizens, sorry — them’s the legal rules we can’t change. But if you play and get it right, I’ll give you props on social channels too! Official rules are here.
