  • STEMNoire 2025 Professional Development Session Proposal

    STEMNoire is soliciting session proposals to provide personal and professional skill development for Black women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Sessions must advance technical or leadership skills to enhance the career development of Black women in STEM including senior undergraduate students, post-baccalaureate trainees, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, faculty, and technical experts. If your session is largely research focused, please submit a research abstract.

  • Please use this form to submit your proposal for a Professional Development session. In past conferences Professional Development sessions have included:

    • Research Grant Writing Workshops
    • Computer Programming/Technical Labs
    • Resume/CV Bootcamps
    • Lectures on Navigating Career Exploration and Transitions

    The submission deadline is January 31, 2025, 11:59 PM EST.

    Sessions that are not accepted for presentation at the STEMNoire 2025 conference may be recontacted for a virtual presentation to the STEMNoire community throughout the year. STEMNoire is a program of IdentifySTEM, a non-profit organization. We recommend that speakers wait until notification of session acceptance to register for STEMNoire 2025 because STEMNoire will offer a registration discount to session presenters.

    Please completely review the outlined Session Content Rubric below. These are the metrics that reviewers will use to score your session proposal, so it is imperative that your proposed session aligns with the guidelines requested.

  • Session Content Rubric (40 Points Total)
    Title (5 points) - Ensure the title is highly engaging, concise, and fully captures the professional development essence of the session.
    Abstract (5 points) - Ensure the abstract is highly focused, compelling, and clearly articulates how the session contributes to  professional development. It is highly likely to engage and interest attendees.
    Description (5 points) - Ensure the description is compelling, highly focused, and clearly conveys the session's transformative impact on attendees’ professional development.
    Key Takeaways or Learning Outcomes (5 points) - Ensure the key takeaways are exceptionally clear, highly relevant, and are highly likely to offer professional development benefits to attendees.
    Facilitator Suitability or Expertise (5 points) - Ensure the facilitator(s) are highly experienced in professional development and exceptionally qualified to lead the session.
    Proposal Quality and Organization (5 points) - Ensure the proposal is exceptionally well-written, highly organized, and comprehensive, with a clear emphasis on professional development.
    Alignment to STEMNoire’s Mission and Conference Theme (5 points) - Ensure the session fully embodies the mission and theme, offering transformative professional development that resonate deeply with attendees.
    Innovation and Originality (5 points) - Ensure the session is groundbreaking, highly innovative, and offers transformative professional development techniques that are deeply relevant to attendees.

  • Professional Development Session Logistics

  • Type of Session

    • Fireside Chat (limited to 2 participants): Conversation between a moderator, guest speaker, and the audience
    • Lecture/Seminar (limited to 2 participants): One or more speakers present on a topic to the audience
    • Networking/Open Layout (limited to 3 participants): Open floorplan event where audience members interact with each other over a common topic
    • Workshop/Technical Lab (limited to 3 participants): Interactive workshop/lab where the speaker/moderator teaches the audience a current technology or skill
    • Roundtable Discussion (limited to 3 participants): Small-group discussion where a moderator/facilitator and audience discuss a topic
    • Panel Discussion (limited to 4 participants): Open discussion between a moderator and a set of panelists. Usually includes audience Q&A.

  • Session Funding Structure

    • Self-funded: This session is not hosted by a STEMNoire 2025 sponsor, and speakers would be interested in receiving a registration discount.
    • Institutionally-funded: This session is not hosted by a STEMNoire 2025 sponsor, however speakers will receive funding for registration, accomodations, and travel from their institution.

    Please note: Registration will only be waived for 2 speakers/session. If a session proposal contains more than 2 speakers, only 2 speakers will receive waived registration.

    If your session contains more than one speaker/participant, or if you would like for someone else to coordinate your session logistics/correspondence, please choose one person to serve as the “Primary Point of Contact”. This person will receive all notifications and will be responsible for all correspondence from the time of submission of this session proposal, up to the conference.
