You may apply for an instruction/learner's permit with the DMV starting at age 14. To get the permit, you'll need to pass a written knowledge and vision test.

    What's next? A provisional license

You can apply for a provisional license between ages 16-17, after you've met the requirements of the instruction/learner's permit. A provisional license allows you to drive independently, with some restrictions:

    • You cannot carry passengers under age 21 unless they are your siblings or a parent or guardian is in the car.
    • You cannot drive between 1 AM and 5 AM unless you're driving to or from a job.

If you have a conviction for a driving mistake, you'll have a $200 penalty and a 2 point violation on your driving record.

What's next? A full unrestricted license

A full unrestricted license is available to people 18 and older.

You must pass a written test, vision test and the road test with the DMV.

NOTE: This license is the one you'll carry until you turn 21. Within 90 days of turning 21, you'll pass an alcohol and drug awareness knowledge test and receive a new license.
