• Foster Application

  • Dear Foster Family,

Thank you very much for your interest in fostering one of our First Mate dogs. Foster parents are the backbone of any rescue--they give us the opportunity to get dogs out of cages and into loving homes.
  • Here are some frequently asked questions about the foster program...

    1. What dogs are eligible to be fostered? All of the dogs in our rescue are eligible to be fostered, so long as they do not have a foster-to-adopt home.

    2. What are the responsibilities of a foster parent? When taking a foster dog into your home we do ask for some basic responsibilities of ourfoster families. We ask that you give the foster dog as much love and care as you would your own pup. In order to keep the dogs happy and healthy we do ask that you provide regular exercise to the pup. We request that you send us photos and videos of the foster dog. The photos help everyone online see how lovable the dog is, so it is an essential part of fostering.

    3. What happens if a foster dog is sick while in my care? Being a foster parent there are no financial responsibilities for vetting. If a dog is sick while in your care, you must notify us immediately. We do have vets that we work with and we request that the dogs are brought only to those vets. Do not bring the dog to the vet without consulting with us first or you may be financially responsible.

    4. Are food and toys provided while fostering a dog? Yes. We do bring enough food for the foster dog. Our rescue is completely supported by donations so we regularly ask for donations of toys and food for our great dogs in order for all of our foster parents to be able to give as much fun and nourishment for the dog. Some of our foster parents do volunteer to provide their own food.

    5. Are purchases made for foster care tax-deductible? Yes our rescue is a 501(c)(3) rescue. Everything that is bought for the rescue as well as any donations made are all tax deductible. We can provide tax paperwork upon request.

    6. Will someone always be available if I need help? Yes. In the event of anything happening. one of us will be very quick to respond in any situation.

By fostering a dog from First Mate Dog Rescue I understand that I have to contact the rescue in the event of any behavioral or medical problems. Fostering does not guarantee the possibility of adoption in the event the family chooses to keep the dog. First Mate Dog Rescue reserves the right to refuse adoption to a foster family in order to get the best home for the dog. Failure to provide accurate information about the well being, both psychological and medical, of the dog will result in immediate removal of the dog from the foster home. The rescue has the right to remove the dog from the foster home at any time in the event the foster home is believed to be an inadequate environment for the dog. By fostering I understand that I will not seek veterinary attention for any foster dog until having contacted Amy/Taylor at (firstmaterescue@yahoo.com) or their cell phones. An adoption fee will apply from the foster home in the event a foster home chooses to keep the foster dog forever.
