Dear Guardian UK,
We, the Australian freelance contributors who produce so much of the journalism that The Guardian Australia relies on, are calling on Guardian management to come to the table and negotiate a fair, transparent, and signed agreement with us that gives us a say in our rates and conditions.
For more than three years we have attempted to negotiate with Guardian Australia in good faith but have been met with opposition and hostility at every turn. This year, management have asserted that they are not able to negotiate with us, as they claim that “Guardian Australia freelancers do not exist”, and our engagement is solely through the UK.
With this in mind, we are writing to you to request a negotiation where we can establish fair rates and conditions and make a transparent and secure agreement through our union. This is a modest and reasonable request which would demonstrate respect towards us as workers.
The Guardian’s reputation rests on its integrity and social conscience, and it is time to apply those principles to how you engage your own freelance contributors.
If we continue to be refused, we will not hesitate to escalate our campaign further.
