Try red yeast rice - take 1800mg twice a day. This can reduce your LDL and contains natural Simvastatin. It is tolerated better than prescription Simvastatin. You have to avoid Grapefruit while on this medication. You will need annual liver tests if you remain on this suppliment because it contains a natural Simvastatin.

Prescribed statin medications may reduce CoQ10, which plays an important role in muscle cell energy. Take CoQ10 200 mg daily. Red yeast rice may also deplete your CoQ10 so it is reasonable to start CoQ10 200mg daily while on red yeast rice as well.

Eating oatmeal daily or 1 cup of oatbran (lowers LDL about 6-9 points)

2 tablespoons of Metamucil daily (lowers LDL about 9 points)

3 tablespoons of plant stanols/sterols as is found in butter-type spread (Benechol, Promise activ/Take Control or Smart Balance Heart Right) has been shown to lower LDL by 10-15%. You should take closer to 2,000mg (2 grams) daily. This does increase calorie consumption by 240 calories per day. You may also buy Cholestoff which is a Nature Made brand of a plant sterol. It may give you gas or GI upset.

Soy protein powder - 25 grams daily for women or 35-40 grams per day for men may reduce your LDL by 10%

Eating an apple daily demonstrated a 22% reduction in LDL at the end of the year

Fish Oil has been shown to help improve triglycerides. Read the back of the label. In order to lower triglycerides you need 1800 mg a day of (DHA + EPA). You can also purchase Carlson's fish oil from Whole Foods (~$30/bottle) and take 2 teaspoons daily. Store your liquid fish oil in the fridge and the tablets in the freezer. Fish oil can thin your blood so you may notice prolonged bleeding if you cut yourself.

Chia seeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce triglycerides.

    Continue diet and exercise.

The only diet that has been evaluation in randomized clinical trial is the Mediterranean diet. In this study involving persons at high cardiovascular risk, the incidence of major cardiovascular events was lower among those assigned to a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts than among those assigned to a reduced-fat diet. Below is the Table which includes the diet that patients followed to reduce risk of major cardiac events
