Two Paint-Outs during Art Shanty Projects' on-ice program on Bdé Umáŋ/Lake Harriet
Sunday, January 19 and Saturday, February 8
11:00am – 2:00pm Performance Time
Meet at Harriet Bandshell boat launch at 10:30am
4135 W Lake Harriet Pkwy, Minneapolis, MN 55409
OPM is pleased to announce we are invited back in 2025 for a paint-out involving demonstration of winter plein air painting and supervising our popular Berton Box public painting pochades for visitors.
The event is free and open to the public. Enter at the Lake Harriet Bandshell and walk out onto the ice (consider schlepping your stuff on a sled). Parking can be tricky; the small lot is reserved for organizers and the big lot fills up fast, so on-street might be your best bet. You may paint anywhere in the shanty village except where performances are scheduled to occur or if a shanty artists requests that you avoid a location because it interferes with their project. Sign up using this form to receive any detailed instructions, parking information, and info about free lunch and hot beverages.
You may bring an unframed winter plein air painting to display on our Zip Line Art Gallery! We will use felt swatches to protect paintings and binder clips to hang them. Bring your business/gallery card to clip to the back so people can contact you and follow your work. This year, any winter plein air painting may be displayed, regardless where or when painted. We hope this sparks conversations with visitors about what we do and and where we've been.
We would like 4 core volunteers for each day's paint-out to help set up and supervise our Berton Box public painting activity. Core volunteers will each receive a $50 cash honorarium from OPM's grant on a first-to-sign-up basis. Anyone may come out and paint so bring your friends!
Berton Boxes will be stocked with Woody crayons, which work in the cold, and 8x10 canvases we can display on our zip line or let people take home as souvenirs.

Be sure to dress for the weather! It's a blast to be a part of this festive event but cold can surprise you before you're ready to quit painting. There's a warming house for taking breaks by a hot wood stove. Hot lunch is provided to artists. Hand and foot-warmer packs are a great idea, and face masks work as well as scarves to keep your nose warm.

Paint-Outs are open to all OPM members and their guests. Participants are not required to register, but it's helpful so we can communicate any last minute changes to locations or weather considerations. At this Paint-Out, artists are requested to engage with visitors and be ready to talk about plein air painting. That can mean answering questions about how to paint snow and atmospheric effects, among all the usual questions we get about winter plein air painting. ("Does paint freeze?")
Thanks for signing up!
