  • General Eligibility Requirements

    1. Applicants must be no younger than 4-years-old and no older than 8- years-old as of January 1st of the current year.
    2. Classes will be based on two age divisions, 4 to 6 year-olds and 7 to 8 year-olds.
      Multiple classes for each age division will be determined by the superintendent and based on the number of entries.
      The San Miguel Basin Fair board will not be responsible for injury or accidents.

     

    Application Process

    1. At least one day prior to the event, applicants must complete an application to enter the Catch-A-Chicken contest.
    2. Applications can be turned in at the CSU Extension Office, completed online or given to a member of the Fair Board.
    3. Applications can be found on the San Miguel County Fair website at the CSU Extension Office.
    4. Participants and their parents must agree to the Catch-A-Chicken Contest requirements, sign a liability release waiver and pay the $10 participation fee by cash or check.

     

    Event Execution

    1. The superintendent will oversee the event execution.
    2. Chickens will be fitted with cloth saddles and a number will be secured to the saddle with Velcro.
    3. Contestants will enter the ring with the numbered chickens.The superintendent will indicate to the contestants when they can proceed.
    4. Contestants must pull the velcroed number off the back of the chicken without restraining the chicken. The first contestant to do so will be declared the winner by the superintendent.

     

    Contest Prize

    1. Winners of the 4 to 6 year old age group will get to keep the chicken or choose a $20 cash reward.
    2. Winners of the 7 to 8 year old age group will get to keep the chicken or choose a $20 cash reward in addition to receiving a $100 gift certificate to a local hatchery or farm supply store redeemable in the following year. If old enough, the contestant is encouraged to enroll in a 4-H poultry or FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience the following year.
