Barra, Crabs & Crocs – Pormpuraaw, May 2028!
Calling all thrill-seekers and fishing fanatics!
Dream of landing a metre-long Barramundi? Craving fresh crab feasts with a side of stunning sunsets? Join us for an unforgettable outback fishing adventure to Pormpuraaw, a hidden gem on the west coast of Cape York, where the fish are plentiful, the crocs are watchful, and the experience is unmatched!
Why Pormpuraaw?
Nestled 500km south of Australia’s tip and 700km northwest of Cairns, Pormpuraaw is a vibrant coastal community home to the Thaayore, Wik, Bakanh, and Yir Yoront Peoples. Known for its pristine coastline, epic fishing, and jaw-dropping sunsets, this is where your fishing dreams come true. I landed a 116cm Barramundi here – and you could too! The coastal stretch is protected from commercial fishing, meaning the creeks teem with Barra, Grunter, Mangrove Jacks, Salmon, and Crabs. Oh, and watch out for those crocs – they’re part of the adventure!
The Journey
We’ll embark from Brisbane in the second week of May 2028, arriving in Pormpuraaw around May 23. Our route takes us via Laura and Musgrave Station (not Kowanyama) for a scenic, relaxed trip:
Road Conditions: Bitumen to north of Laura, then 139km of mostly bitumen and decent gravel to Musgrave. From there, it’s smooth sailing (mostly bitumen and good gravel) to Pormpuraaw.
Caravans Welcome: Yes, we’re bringing our caravans for comfort!
Timing is Everything: We’ll hit the dirt post-wet season, after graders smooth the way, and before the school holiday rush of speeding Hiluxes.
Scenic Stops: I’ve got a few secret spots up my sleeve as we head north – expect stunning sights and laid-back vibes.
Camping in Paradise
We’ll set up camp at the Chapman River, just 100m from a concrete boat ramp. Here’s what to expect:
Cost: $85/day per vehicle ($850 for 10 days of fishing). It’s a premium experience, but where else can you fish like this?
Amenities: Toilet/shower block with cold water, plus a tap for fresh town water (I’ll run a hose to keep tanks topped up).
Weather: Pleasant 22–32°C daily – perfect for fishing and chilling.
Limited Spots: Only 6 vehicles allowed, so secure your spot early!
Fishing Heaven
Get ready for the catch of a lifetime! Expect:
Target Species: Barramundi, Salmon, Grunter, Mangrove Jacks, and heaps of crabs.
Crab Tip: Pace yourself – eating more than four crabs at a time might lead to a tummy rebellion! I stick to four for breakfast, four for lunch… you get the idea.
Fishing Options: Cast from the beach or riverbanks (mind the crocs!), but a boat is best for serious action.
Boats Needed: For six cars, we need at least three tinnies (mine’s 3.5m, perfect for two cars to share – one morning, one afternoon). Bring your boat if you’ve got one – the more, the merrier!

Anglers: Anyone chasing that “metery” Barra – whether from shore or boat.
