This Genius Teatime we're flipping the script and asking for your genius in feeding your community! Let's talk about your favorite food preparations and ideas that A. are low cost, B. can be used in times of low supplies/access and C. taste amazing! This is also a good place for talking about alternative food supplies, home growing, and mutual aid. Could prove to be both useful and tasty in the times to come.
A. Laura Brody (host) grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska amongst a mix of hippies, academics, and survivalists and has a long history of prepping food to share in community. She was shocked at the stark contrast between her friends stockpiling moose for the winter and the food attitudes at her liberal arts college in Claremont, CA. She regularly attempts and sometimes succeeds in bringing people together to make food in community, share tasty treats, and combine bulk food purchases.
The Hollywood Food Coalition (where Laura gives mending sessions once a month) offers a free, concierge food service aimed at providing small to medium-sized social service nonprofits the food they need, when they want it, so they can focus on their missions. They have community dinners every night for the unhoused populations of Hollywood, provide mobile health and vision clinics and referrals to social services, and pass out shoes, clothes, hygiene kits, blankets, and more. If you have a local mutual aid food network, please share it!
