2025 SCHOLARSHIP GENERAL INFORMATION

The Alpha Alpha Lambda Omega (AALO) Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated^® Scholarship Program was established to ensure professional and personal development for continuous growth, advancement, and success through education, community involvement and mentoring.

The scholarship program provides scholarships annually to deserving students soon to be attending an establishment of higher learning.  

The AALO Scholarship Program Committee will annually determine the number and amount of scholarships awarded as funding warrants.  This year, Five - $1000 scholarships will be awarded to:

• Graduating high school seniors (3)
• Adult learners pursuing career advancement opportunities (2)

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be a resident of Prince George's County.

High School Student Applicants for the AALO Scholarship Program must be planning to attend an accredited post-secondary institution or technical vocational/trade school.  The applicant must have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA (4.00 scale).  Both female and male students are eligible.

Adult Learner Applicants must be seeking an experience which will further their personal or professional growth. This includes but is not limited to educational courses, professional workshops, or programs providing for personal or professional improvement of the applicant.

Recipients of the scholarships are chosen through a process that evaluates the following areas:

APPLICANT INFORMATION:

Please upload a photo of the applicant that will be used to announce awardees on social media and for public relations. Photos submitted will be kept on file with the application.

ESSAY QUESTION:

Essay Options: (High School Students Only)  (minimum 250 words / maximum 500 words) 

• Excluding family members, select a woman who has significantly influenced you. This could be a woman you personally know or a woman you learned or read about and was inspired by their life. Describe that influence and explain what actions you have taken to incorporate her values into your daily life. 

• Discuss a relevant social justice issue that you are extremely passionate about. Describe it's importance, influence and impact on your daily life. Discuss how do you plan to continue to make a personal impact?

• Discuss your contributions to your local community. Describe the service project that you participated in and the influential work that you've done in the communitiy. Discuss how the project has influenced your life.

NOTE:  No essays about family members:  mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, etc.).

RECOMMENDATION:

Upload a recommendation from a personal reference. Persons writing the recommendation should specify relationship in which they know or have observed the applicant. Their recommendation should also attest to your character and achievements.

Provide a professional resume that includes: work experience, volunteer experience, community service, extracurricular activities, membership organizations, educational and career goals and special achievements/ accomplishments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How are scholarship recipients selected?
   The AALO Scholarship Committee selects the scholarship winners based on the criteria above and all decisions of the committee are final.
   
   
2. How are scholarship recipients notified?
   The AALO Scholarship Committee will notify all scholarship recipients via email or phone, if email is not available, in May, 2025.  The names will also be posted on AALO's social media and chapter website.
   
   
3. If I would like to make changes to the application I submitted, can I resubmit my application?
   We recommend that you carefully review the application for accuracy before it is submitted.  If you have questions or revisions to the submitted application, please contact Tamara Henry via email at aalo.community@gmail.com.
   
   
4. Who is considered an adult learner? Adult learners are individuals over the age of 18 who are seeking to advance their career or personal goals. These learners can be looking to take courses to further their career opportunities, personal well-being or get a leg up on their current position.
