  • Where: Bala & Penllyn Community Association Pavilion, Castle Park, Castle Street LL23 7UW Bala.

Next to the Bala Town Football Club G3 stadium.

There is ample parking outside the pavilion and a large parking area next to the Castle Street playground.

When: One Sunday a month, 1-2 pm

Dates for your diary: Jan 26th, Feb 9th, March 9th, April 13th. We will then take a break for the summer.

Starting September 2025, funding from the National Lottery will allow us to offer these sessions free. They will take place on the second Sunday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. at Castle Street Pavilion in Bala.

What to expect: Short warm-up followed by 30 minutes of pad work between parent and child.

    No experience is needed.

Price: £10 (cash) for one parent & child. £2 per extra family member.

Boxing glove advice: Parents and children will need a set of gloves each (unless you are of similar sizes—one person wears the gloves while the other holds the pads).

Boxing glove sizes are measured by weight using ounces. The number of ounces refers to the weight of each glove, which indicates how much padding remains between your hand and the opponent. Generally, a lighter boxing glove is more well-suited for our practices.

Meet Your Coach: Qualifications & Expertise

Dave Hughes, owner of Alpha Unit Training, is a highly skilled and fully certified kicking instructor recognised by the ISK association.

He is a Level 3 personal trainer with extensive qualifications in boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling. Having competed in numerous full-contact fights across the UK, Dave brings a wealth of experience to his training sessions.

While his imposing presence and authoritative voice may seem intimidating at first, rest assured, Dave has a warm, approachable side. He has worked with children of all abilities and is truly a gentle giant at heart!

Dave is a Welsh speaker, so sessions can be conducted bilingually if needed. If your family prefers this option, please be sure to let him know.

The group size will be limited to 8 families, allowing the activity provider to give sufficient attention to each family.

Pavilion information: We aim to create a safe space for you to enjoy quality time with your child.

The pavilion is wheelchair accessible and has a disabled toilet. The hand dryers in the toilets are turned off, and we provide hand towels.

The room is light and nicely decorated with flag bunting and wall artwork. The ceilings are low, and half the room is carpeted, so it is not particularly noisy. There is also a sofa area.

The back doors lead onto a large cricket field, which we can use if our children become overloaded and need a break from the session; we can also utilise this space in warmer weather.

There is also a children's playground and Multi Use Games Area outside the pavilion.
