Occupant Kinematics for the Traffic Crash Reconstructionist

This course will teach you how to recognize and interpret traffic crash evidence as it relates to occupant seating positions. We will show you how to determine the occupant movement from the crash damage and the subsequent injuries that resulted.

We will illustrate the basics of occupant movement and teach you how to ascertain the direction of movement during a collision. You will learn how to determine occupant seating positions and safety belt usage and we will examine the significance of airbag and other restraint deployments.

We’ll show you how to read the medical records that can be obtained with a warrant as well as autopsy reports of the injuries sustained by the vehicle’s occupants so you can understand how they relate to the investigation. When correlated with the vehicle damage, these reports can provide further evidence of occupant positions and movement.

Actual crashes will be used as case studies to allow you to put the theories into practice. This course is designed for traffic crash investigators who have a good working knowledge of the techniques and applications of formulas taught in basic crash investigation courses.

Prerequisite(s):
You must have completed, at a minimum, IPTM’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction course or its equivalent.

1.    If you cannot attend this training class, a cancellation request must be sent by email from yourself or your agency to maxweric@kean.edu  AT LEAST 14 DAYS BEFORE the first day of training for this class.

2.    You are unable to attend, and an approved replacement is found who will attend the training in your place, a replacement request must be sent by email from yourself or your agency to paul.applegate@njsp.gov AT LEAST 3 DAYS BEFORE the first day of training for this class.  This request must contain the officer's name to be replaced and the new officer’s name, rank, email address, and cell phone number.

3.    If you or your agency fail to provide any of the above notifications and you do not attend the first day of training, you will forfeit your ability to register for any NJDHTS-sponsored training course (found on NJSAFEROADS.COM) for a period of no less than 6 months from the 1st day of training of the course missed.

4.    Submitting this registration request does not ensure you a spot in this class. You will be notified by email of your enrollment status no later than three weeks before the 1st day of the training course.
