Letter of Engagement
Thank you for choosing Brown & Co. Financial Services to assist you with your income tax preparation for the requested tax year. This letter confirms the terms of our engagement with you and outlines the nature and extent of the services we will provide.
We will prepare your requested federal and state income tax returns. It is your responsibility to provide accurate and complete information for us to prepare your returns. Please note that the law imposes penalties for underestimating tax liability. While we may ask for clarification regarding certain items, we will not audit or verify the data you submit.
We will perform only the necessary accounting services required to prepare your tax returns. Therefore, our engagement should not be relied upon to detect errors, fraud, or illegal activities. If we identify any material errors, fraud, or other illegal acts, we will notify you.
By signing this agreement, you acknowledge that:
1. All information provided to Brown & Co. Financial Services is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge.
2. You are responsible for maintaining supporting documentation to validate the information provided.
3. Providing false information knowingly is a serious offense and may result in penalties, including fines, restitution, court proceedings, or imprisonment.
You agree to waive any liability for Brown & Co. Financial Services or its preparer for errors resulting from incorrect information you provide. By signing below, you authorize Brown & Co. Financial Services to file your tax return.
Additionally, you acknowledge that:
• If you and/or your spouse owe federal or government debts (e.g., IRS, child support, student loans), you remain responsible for paying the tax preparation fees at the time of service.
• If your federal refund is mailed rather than direct-deposited, you are still responsible for the tax preparation fees.
• Unpaid tax preparation fees will result in legal action to recover the amount owed.
• You will not dispute fees for services rendered due to IRS delays.
Invoices are due and payable upon presentation. We will return your original records at the end of this engagement. You should securely store these records, along with supporting documents, as they may be required later. We will retain copies of your records and work papers for three years, after which they will be destroyed. Paper copies of the tax return and other documents will be available for an additional fee.
Our engagement to prepare your tax returns concludes with the delivery of the completed returns (if paper-filing) or your signature and our subsequent submission of your tax return (if e-filing). If you choose not to e-file through our office, you are solely responsible for filing your returns with the appropriate taxing authorities. Carefully review all tax-return documents before signing.
By signing this agreement, you:
• Agree to allow Brown & Co. Financial Services to file your tax return.
• Understand we do not offer quotes comparable to DIY tax software.
• Authorize your signature to be transferrable to IRS forms 1040, 8879, 7216, and all other applicable forms in the finalized tax return for submission.
