This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the history and theory of political art and its role in social movements, while also emphasizing group work and research. The objective is to create one or more political collages with the guidelines given in class.
Class 1: Introduction to Political Art / Review and Feedback
You’ll begin with “When Art Fights Back: Creativity as Resistance and Rebellion,” a lecture exploring the history of political art. You’ll learn about the different categories and forms of political art throughout history and analyze political art pieces to understand how artists use their work to make political statements. You’ll watch a live demonstration of various collage techniques, and I’ll guide you step-by-step through creating your own collage.
Class 2: The Power of Imagery in Political Collage / Final Presentation
This session kicks off with “Stick it to the Man!: A Journey through Political Collage,” a lecture covering the history of political collage from Dada to Punk. You’ll dive deeper into the visual elements of political collage and explore how they can be used to convey political messages. Together, we’ll analyze significant collages and their meanings and discuss how you can use color, composition, and symbolism to craft powerful, impactful statements. In this class, I’ll review your collage, along with your curatorial text. You'll receive feedback and we'll discuss the impact and potential of your piece.
