Announcement: VCSL Checklist Training Workshop
The National ASL & English Bilingual Consortium for Early Childhood Education is pleased to announce the Visual Communication and Sign Language (VCSL) Checklist Training, a two-weekend workshop designed for mentors and professionals working with Deaf children aged 0–5 years.
Workshop Objectives:
Using a transdisciplinary approach, participants will:
- Explore methods for assessing young children’s language and learning in home and educational settings.
- Discuss appropriate assessment tools for identifying diverse children's language and literacy needs.
- Engage with the VCSL Checklist tool tailored for young Deaf children.
Workshop Details:
Seating is limited to 20 participants. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis for those who meet the following criteria:
- Fluency in academic and social ASL*
- Knowledge of ASL and English psycholinguistics, developmental language milestones, cognitive and social child development, and Deaf culture.
- Familiarity with general cognitive, social, language, and emergent literacy assessments.
- Understanding of Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP) and/or Individual Educational Programs (IEP).
Please note: This workshop will be conducted in ASL only, without interpretation.
Registration Requirements:
- Submit a brief CV detailing your job title/position.
- Provide evidence of ASL proficiency (e.g., ASLPI Score 4.0 or equivalent).
- Applicants who do not meet the requirements will be reimbursed if not approved.
