The research award is for 10 weeks (May 21 - July 30 2025, anticipated). Awardees are expected to be good citizens and to participate in all REU activities.
Participants are expected to:
- Conduct research/work full-time (40 hours per week) for 10 weeks.
- Complete on-line assessment surveys at the start and at the end of the program.
- Complete surveys for up to 10 years after REU so that we can assess the impacts of our program on students' professional development. This requires that students provide a permanent e-mail address so that we can stay in touch.
- Connect with the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at JMU through LinkedIn. If you do not currently have a LinkedIn account, no worries. We will help you set one up during the program.
- Attend scheduled meetings and participate in events throughout the summer program, including science communication events.
- Present research results at events throughout the summer and at the end-of-summer symposium.
- Submit a research paper that describes the results obtained over the course of the summer.
- Adhere to all safety protocols.
- Sign and adhere to a code-of-conduct.
- Complete Responsible-conduct-of-research (RCR) training.
- If appropriate, work with your research advisor to write up the results of your research for presentation at an external conference or for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
- Adhere to the expectation that REU awardees are "ambassadors" for the program who aim to disseminate the results of their work and experiences broadly.
- Commit to the creation of an inclusive learning environment. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is committed to an inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of its community. We view our opportunity to teach, serve, and interact with many, varied individuals to be a privilege. We will strive to reach, support, and show respect to every person and we expect our community will do the same.
Note - many of these activities significantly strengthen your resume and professional preparation.
