    • ASL Interest and Experience

    • Previous research experience is not required for ASL interpreting students, but we would like to know about any experience you may have in this area.

    • The Chemistry REU at JMU is designed to be an experience for students, both Deaf and hearing, which goes beyond the classroom, to encourage chemistry and biochemistry students to do research in their field. You will facilitate communication between D/HH and hearing participants (students and faculty) both in and outside of the laboratory. You will also be living with some of the students with whom you will be working. Two professional ASL interpreters will mentor and support you throughout the 10-week experience.

      10. If appropriate, work with your research advisor to write up the results of your research for presentation at an external conference or for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
      11. Adhere to the expectation that REU awardees are "ambassadors" for the program who aim to disseminate the results of their work and experiences broadly.
      12. Commit to the creation of an inclusive learning environment. The Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is committed to an inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of its community. We view our opportunity to teach, serve, and interact with many, varied individuals to be a privilege.
