Use this site to apply as an ASL interpreting student for the Summer 2025 NSF-REU program in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at James Madison University. Review of applications will begin approximately February 20, 2025 and will continue until all positions are filled.
Before you begin, please gather the following:
Previous research experience is not required for ASL interpreting students, but we would like to know about any experience you may have in this area.
The Chemistry REU at JMU is designed to be an experience for students, both Deaf and hearing, which goes beyond the classroom, to encourage chemistry and biochemistry students to do research in their field. You will facilitate communication between D/HH and hearing participants (students and faculty) both in and outside of the laboratory. You will also be living with some of the students with whom you will be working. Two professional ASL interpreters will mentor and support you throughout the 10-week experience.
Please record yourself interpreting these videos in order, either as individual videos, or together in one video. Except for Video 1 (sign to voice), please ensure the picture of you interpreting is full screen so your signing is clearly visible. Upload in next field.
*It is fine to preview and practice interpreting the videos before recording yourself interpreting.
