• Notice of Intent to Retire and (Optional) Request for Faculty Emerit Status

  • This form is intended to be used by all CMU faculty who are planning to retire. Faculty completing the form will also have the opportunity to indicate whether they would like to be considered for Emerit status upon their retirement. 

    What is Emerit status?

    Emerit status is an honorific title conferred on retiring faculty who have had a distinguished faculty career at Carnegie Mellon and who meet the minimum years of service set forth in the policy.  Emeriti faculty may choose to engage to varying degrees in academic, service and social activities based on their individual preferences. Emerit status is reviewed and confirmed by the faculty's department head and dean and the university provost and president. 

    Who is eligible for Emerit status?

    Tenure track, teaching track and research track faculty who are at the rank of associate or above, and librarian/archivist faculty at the rank of senior or above, who have served as faculty for at least 5 years are eligible to request emerit status at the time of retirement.

    There are many decisions to make throughout the retirement process. We strongly encourage you to discuss your options with the following.

    Human Resources

    Human Resources can provide information on financial disbursements, medical benefits, cobra, and other considerations. 

    Unit or College Leadership

    Your department head or dean should be informed of your intent to retire. They can provide information on the various types of retirement options, the rights and opportunities of Emerit status, and more.

    Additionally, your department head and dean will be part of the approval path for Emerit status. 

  • Emerit Status Eligibility

    • Are on the tenure, teaching, or research track at the rank of Associate or above, OR
    • Are Librarian/Archivist faculty at the rank of Senior or above; AND
    • Have at least five years of service as faculty at Carnegie Mellon.
