  • HNP Schools Program

    Application for Interested Teachers
  • Thank you for your interest in the HNP Schools Program! If you have any questions on this application, please contact Janneke Peterson (janneke@homegrownnationalpark.org).

We are happy to work with you and your school to determine an appropriate location for the native plant garden. All costs surrounding this program will be fully covered by the grant. The value of the program for one year is $4,000.

  • Info & Interest

  •  Program & Habitat Commitments

  • This program combines classroom learning with hands-on habitat restoration. Participating teachers will teach the Symbiotic Schoolyard Ecosystems unit and install a native plant garden on campus.

HNP will support garden planning and installation. Garden size will be determined based on student participation and available space. A standard 6 x 10 foot garden includes 25 native perennial plants.

  • Prep & Maintenance

  • Before planting, you will prepare a 6 × 10 area by removing lawn and weeds. After planting, the garden will need basic care while it gets established, including watering during the first three weeks, occasional weeding, and supplemental watering during dry periods. HNP will provide the training and guidance to set you up for success.

  • Timeline & Training

  • Future Enrichment (Optional)

  • Hopefully, you will teach the Symbiotic Schoolyard Ecosystem Unit for years to come in conjunction with new native garden spaces.

After Year 1, schools can continue planting additional roll-out gardens, or move to Phase 2: wildflower seed propagation.
