Petition Against the Development of the "Rails to Trails" Project We, the undersigned, are residents and community members living in proximity to the abandoned railroad track that is proposed to be converted into a "Rails to Trails" tourist attraction. While we understand and appreciate the potential benefits of recreational trails, we are compelled to express our strong opposition to this project due to significant concerns that directly impact our safety and property. Historically, the abandoned railroad has been a catalyst for criminal activities in our area. The seclusion of the tracks has provided a haven for unlawful behaviors, including break-ins, vandalism, and other property crimes. These incidents have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among residents, diminishing our quality of life and affecting our property values. The proposed "Rails to Trails" project, without substantial and guaranteed security measures, threatens to exacerbate these problems by providing further access and escape routes for potential criminals, rather than deterring them. Increased foot traffic might seem beneficial, but without proper oversight, it could lead to more frequent criminal activity, putting residents at greater risk. Therefore, we petition our local government officials to reconsider this project. We request a comprehensive review of the security measures and community impact, engaging with residents to find a solution that prioritizes our safety and well-being. We believe that community development should not come at the cost of the community's security. Furthermore, we bring to attention a critical legal and liability issue associated with the abandoned railroad. According to property deeds of several adjacent landowners, the easement granted for railroad purposes reverts back to the landowners if the railroad remains abandoned for more than two years. This reversion clause has been activated, as the railroad has been abandoned for over two years. Initiating a "Rails to Trails" project on this land without clear and legal resolution of these property rights could lead to significant legal disputes and liabilities for the local government. It is imperative that any actions be taken respect the rights of property owners and comply with existing legal agreements to prevent potential litigation and further complications.We urge our officials to prioritize the needs and concerns of its residents by exploring alternative uses of the abandoned railroad that do not compromise our safety or promote further criminal activities.Please sign this online petition so that the voices of the people this directly affects can be heard.
