Neuroscience Scholars Program: Mentor Application
Please complete the form below to apply for a position as a summer NSP mentor
What is Neuroscience Scholars Program?
The Neuroscience Scholars Program (NSP) is a transformative 5-week summer research training initiative designed to prepare undergraduates, including those who identify with groups historically excluded in biomedical research, for graduate school and STEM careers. Through personalized mentorship and hands-on laboratory experiences in the Department of Neurobiology, the program aims to cultivate the next generation of scientists. In addition to supporting college students, NSP also provides research opportunities for high school students from Baltimore City Public Schools, further enhancing their path toward STEM majors in college. The program fosters partnerships with local community institutions, regional colleges, and universities, all aligned in the goal of creating a more representative scientific workforce. Scholars in the NSP will engage in a collaborative, hypothesis-driven research project with a mentor, participate in seminars, and connect with fellow students during program socials. The program culminates with a symposium where scholars present their research findings to the Department of Neurobiology, showcasing the skills and knowledge gained during their immersive experience.
Who can be a NSP mentor?
Scientists in the Department of Neurobiology who have a strong motivation to foster a more representative scientific workforce via a summer mentorship program, and are dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment in lab. Chosen mentors will be matched with high school students or current undergraduate students with ties to Baltimore. Graduate student applicants should have joined their PhD lab and along with post-doctoral fellows, must receive approval from their PI to host the scholar in the lab and devote the time required to mentoring. Mentor applications are reviewed based on merit of the scientific project proposed for the NSP Scholar. Selected NSP mentors will receive a $500 NSP Mentor Award at the end of the summer.
When will NSP take place?
Scholars will be hosted by their labs over an 5 week (25 hrs/wk, 5 hrs/day) period, between July 7th - August 8th.
