The Ewart Endowment for Theological Education honours the legacy of Ewart College, and provides support for education and initiatives related to the three pillars of diaconal ministry: Christian education, pastoral care, and social service ministry.
Annual grants are available from the interest generated by the endowment, subject to the Terms of Reference set by the General Assembly, and the approval of the Assembly Council.
DEADLINES:
Applications for grants over $5,000 must be submitted by September 30 (for consideration at the fall meeting of the Assembly Council) or January 31 (for consideration at the spring meeting of Assembly Council).
Applications for grants of $5,000 or less may be submitted at any time.
GENERAL ASSEMBLY TERMS OF REFERENCE (A&P 2025, p. 91, 31):
The 150th General Assembly updated the terms of reference for the Ewart Endowment for Theological Education to the following:
- The first call on the net proceeds [from the sale of 156 St. George Street, Toronto, the former site of Ewart College] shall be an amount sufficient to repay the borrowings from the Ewart Resource Fund, with interest.
- The balance from the net proceeds shall be used to establish an endowment for theological education to be named the Ewart Endowment for Theological Education, in recognition of the long history of Ewart College and its contribution to The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
- The capital of the Ewart Endowment shall be invested as part of the Consolidated Portfolio of The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
- The interest income available from the Ewart Endowment shall be administered by the Assembly Council.
- The first call on the available income shall be to support studies in Christian Education and Faith Formation, leading to a recognized degree at an accredited theological institution.
Additional calls on available income shall be to support:
- studies in field of traditional diaconal ministry (education, missions, pastoral care and social services) leading to a recognized degree at an accredited theological institution.
- continuing education and new initiatives in Christian Education for individuals, colleges, congregations, presbyteries, synods and the denomination.
- Awards or grants in the name of the Ewart Endowment shall not displace or diminish the institutional grants to the theological colleges.
WHO MAY APPLY:
- Agencies and organizations involved in the ministry of The Presbyterian Church in Canada are eligible to apply to the Ewart Endowment for Theological Education.
- Sessions, presbyteries, synods, colleges and agencies of The Presbyterian Church in Canada may apply for grants to fund proposed projects to be carried out by individuals or groups of individuals.
- Grants will be given only for projects which are supported by an accountable body such as session, synod, presbytery or college board or agency.
- Projects will be considered which are consistent with the theology and educational praxis of The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
ABOUT THE GRANTS:
- The grant amounts will be flexible.
- The Ewart Endowment for Theological Education Committee will inform the church annually on total monies available for grants.
- Applicants are encouraged to present proposals in light of the terms set by the General Assembly (see above) and the above objectives.
- Applicants will be notified in writing concerning the result of the application and grant.
- Grants may be made for projects that do not exceed five years.
- Long term projects (of 3–5 years) will receive annual grants based upon satisfactory progress reports submitted to the committee and contingent upon available income from the funds.
- Successful applicants are to submit to the Committee by December 30th of each year a final report on the project or an interim evaluation of the project if still ongoing, such as in the case of long-term projects.
