Are you passionate about learning and sharing knowledge with others? We’re seeking volunteer docents!
The College of Southern Maryland Velocity Center, in cooperation and partnership with Maryland Humanities and Life Journeys Writers Guild, continues its exploration of innovation and invention happening in rural America as it hosts the local showing of “Spark! Places of Innovation,” a Smithsonian traveling exhibition. “Spark!” will be on view at the Velocity Center from May 17 to June 29, 2025.
What is a Docent?
A docent is a trained guide who welcomes visitors, provides tours, and answers questions to enhance the visitor experience. No prior experience is needed – just your enthusiasm and interest in supporting this exciting exhibit!
Why Volunteer as a Docent?
- Receive Training: You’ll be trained by experts from the Smithsonian Institution and Maryland Humanities (anticipated training date: May 15, 2025).
- Flexible Schedule: Sign up for time slots that fit your availability during the six-week exhibit.
- Minimum Commitment: We ask for at least 12 hours over the exhibit’s run, but any time you can contribute is welcome!
- Earn community service hours (perfect for students!).
- Be Part of Something Big: Represent your community and help visitors discover the stories of innovation and creativity showcased in the exhibit.
What You'll Do:
- Welcome visitors to the exhibit.
- Provide guided tours and share key highlights.
- Answer questions and ensure visitors have a meaningful experience.
