  • Years ago while on the search for queer community in Santa Cruz, I was introduced to Homo Happy Hour (aka Queer Happy Hour). The event was coordinated by and for community members in Motiv. A handmade sign on neon posterboard adorned the window with the words "Monterey Bay Aqueerium" and little hand drawn fish. The name of the mural pays homage to the sign and to the little ways we create our own communities everywhere we go.

As I though of this and wanted to tie in my conservation background and create opportunities for environmental education, the idea of a mural that simulates an aquarium tunnel or being underwater surrounded by a colorful diversity of aquatic life came to mind. Drawing from my experiences as a castmember at Walt Disney World, I wanted to replicate the ways in which the company makes waiting in a queue less boring and more interactive and engaging. As such, the mural is intentionally placed in the hallway to the restrooms.

My hope with this mural is that it makes a rather boring space engaging, provides a bit of environmental education, and showcases a community of artists.

Applications recieved by March 1st will be prioritized. Installations are estimated to begin in April. An unvieling event of some sort may take place on or around Earth Day, April 22nd. These dates are subject to change.
