About the scholarship

The annual He Manu Pīrere nō te Kōhanga Reo Tertiary Scholarships are provided to support graduates of Kōhanga Reo currently enrolled for full-time study in a New Zealand Tertiary Education Organisation (TEO).

Refer to the Scholarship Application Guidelines for further information.
2025 Scholarships
The following Scholarships are available in 2025. Please indicate below which Scholarship you wish to apply for:*

* Postgraduate Scholarships are available to Ngā Manu Pirere pursuing postgraduate studies, other than at Masters and PhD level.
Eligbility criteria
Before continuing, please answer the following questions to determine your eligibility to apply:
1. Were you a Mokopuna of Kōhanga Reo and did you attend Kōhanga Reo for two years or more?
2. Are you currently enrolled for full-time study at a New Zealand Tertiary Institute?
3. Is Te Reo Māori a component of your current study programme, or can you clearly demonstrate your ongoing commitment to the revitalisation of Te Reo in your daily life?
If you can answer ĀE to all three patai then you are eligible to apply for one of our 2025 Scholarships. Please do not apply if you cannot answer yes to all three.

Please note: if you have been successful for a scholarship in the past, you are not eligible to apply for the same scholarship again this year.

Wāhanga A: Criteria 1500 words HE KETE WHAKAIRO Tā Hemi Henare (PhD) Scholarship (1 at $10,000) In 1500 words, provide an overview of the value of te reo Māori in your personal and professional life including the role the kaupapa of Te Kōhanga Reo plays. Identify your insight and aspirations into the future state of the Māori language and approaches to the revitalisation of te reo Māori.Wāhanga B: Criteria 800 words (2 pages) NGĀ KETE PĪNGAO TKR Masters Scholarship(5 at $2,000) In 800 words, provide an overview of the value of te reo Māori in your area of study including the role the kaupapa of Te Kōhanga Reo plays, and a description of your ongoing commitment to the revitalisation of te reo.Wāhanga C: Criteria 600 words (1 - 1.5 pages) NGĀ KETE KIEKIE TKR Postgraduate Scholarship (4 at $1,500) In 600 words, provide an overview of the value of te reo Māori in your area of study including the role the kaupapa of Te Kōhanga Reo plays, and a description of your ongoing commitment to the revitalisation of te reo.Wāhanga D: Criteria 300 words (0.5 - 1 page) NGĀ KETE HARAKEKE TKR Provider (Undergraduate) Scholarship (19 at $1,000) In 300 words, provide an overview of your experience within Te Kōhanga Reo, and the contribution that te reo Māori has made in your journey, including your area of study.
