• Majority in the Middle

    Local Elected Official Group
  • Majority in the Middle is hosting monthly online "support groups" for local elected officials starting in February 2025. The groups, hosted on Zoom, provide a space for officials to share experiences, seek advice, and build a supportive community. The groups are facilitated by experienced peers and will be an outlet for a range of topics relevant to local governance and serving in public office.

If you have questions about the program or anything on this form, see the FAQ at the bottom of the page, or feel free to reach out to our Executive Director (shannon@majoritymiddle.com)

Thank you in advance for submitting your information. We'll be in touch!

  • If the above dates don't work for you, please pick the ones that could work for you below. If/when we have enough people to host another group, we'll be in touch.

(We're offering a LOT of options, but don't intend to host a group at every one of these times -- so don't pick just one, and don't count on any one time yet. We just want to start off with the most options and then narrow down to the times that work for the most people.)

"First, Second, etc." refer to the month
ie First Monday = first Monday of the month; Second Friday = second Friday of the month; etc

  • FAQ:

Q: How many groups will there be?

A: Not entirely sure yet. We're aiming for three, but we might do more or less depending on the interest level. Obviously the number of people who want to participate overall will have an impact on that answer. We will aim to have groups of 10 members max -- more than that and it's hard to have a conversation.

Q: Do I have to stick with the group I'm assigned?

A: Not necessarily. Once we get the basic times set up if you want to shift we can probably make that happen. ("Probably" because we still want to keep the group numbers manageable.)

Q: Can other members of my council/board participate too?

A: Absolutely. Anyone who is a local elected official in Minnesota is welcome to fill out this form. We do ask that any additions go through this process -- don't just share the zoom link.

    Q: Do quorum rules apply?

A: Any gathering or discussion that you'd normally avoid because of accidental quorum or walking caucus rules would apply here too. We would encourage you and your colleagues to particiapte in different groups anyway -- the larger your networks, the more valuable information you can bring back to your role.

Q: What if I want to just interact with people in the same role (city council only, or school board only, etc.)?

A: We think that part of the magic of these groups is the cross-functional opportunities that they bring for information sharing and network building. We also don't want to duplicate groups that other role-specific organizations (League of Cities, Association of Counties, Association of School Boards, etc.) might host.

Q: How will I know how to participate once I fill out the form?

A: We're holding the form open for a couple of weeks at least to collect interest. Once we have enough interest to start putting the groups together you'll get a calendar invitation with a Zoom link from shannon@majoritymiddle.com.

Q: Does it cost money to participate?

A: Absolutely not. (In fact, we have a model that would compensate participants for their time. That's not funded yet, so we can't put that into place right now. But please know that we understand that your time is valuable.)
