• Tax Season is here again! I know you are just as excited as I am.

This tax season marks the third year LMR Practice has been in business. I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you for being my valued client. Your trust in me to prepare your return and assist you with your tax planning needs allows me to remain self-employed for another year. Since I started preparing tax returns in 2012, I have dreamed of building and growing my own practice and your support has made that dream a reality. Thank you for being an essential part of this journey! While I make every effort to ensure each of my clients feels valued and appreciated, if there is something I can do to serve you better, please don't hesitate to bring it to my attention.

The following information is intended to address some questions I have received and to inform you about certain policies I have put in place and changes with my practice in general. The tax organizer is designed to assist you in gathering your tax documents, not provoke a headache. If you don't want to fill it out, you don't have to however, I would appreciate it if you could answer the miscellaneous questions and return those to me.

I look forward to hearing from you!

    Linda Roche, EA

  • Office Update

As promised, I have an office now where you can visit me (by appointment only), drop off documents, sign things and more. Many of my clients haven't never met me face-to-face, and if you're one of them, now you can! If you feel like somethings been missing in your life, it might just be that you haven't met your tax preparer. Just kidding, sort of! I look forward to putting a face to the name. Please note, both the physical and mailing addresses have changed. The new address is:

    5045 Lorimar Drive, Suite 160
    Plano, TX 75093

In an effort to keep my prices lower, I am sharing office space with another tax preparer, friend, and former employer, Marc Lewis. I am not merging my practice with his, just sharing resources. As is common in these arrangements, we'll be sharing tax software too. Do not be alarmed if you see J. Marc Lewis & Associates at the bottom of your return; LMR Practice is still doing the work.

    Documents, Deadlines, Discounts

Unless you have made prior arrangements with me, you MUST utilize Smart Vault to get your tax documents to me. I get so many emails/texts during tax season, having a single location to find your documents will not only increase my efficiency (and sanity), it will help to ensure nothing gets overlooked. Once you have uploaded the majority of your documents, please give me a heads up by sending an email or text to let me know. I understand that some may be hesitant to use the vault, but it is the same concept as logging into your bank account online. The chances of either of our email accounts being hacked are significantly higher than those of Smart Vault. Smart Vault will house your current and previous year's documents and tax returns. If you prefer a printed copy of your return, just let me know, and I will provide that. You can easily access your Smart Vault by going to my website, www.LMRpractice.com and clicking on client portal. If you are a new client without a log in, please let me know and I will send you an invitation.

To ensure your tax return is filed on time and to give the attention that both you and your return deserve, I must receive ALL of your tax documents no later than March 31st. After this date, an extension will be filed. An extension is a six-month extension of time to file your taxes, not pay them. If you typically owe taxes when your return is filed, the IRS will assess a late payment penalty. Please get in touch with me if you cannot get your documents in on time and will need an extension.

A discount of 10% is available for returning clients who submit ALL of their documents prior to March 1st. Clients who regularly receive a K1, complex brokerage statements, or are self-employed, will likely not be eligible.

  • Pricing and Payment

Tax return fees are based on complexity and are not one size fits all. I do not have preset pricing for my federal and state tax income tax returns. Having said that, if your return price will differ by more than 5-10%, this will be communicated in advance. Payment must be received in full before I file your return. Please let me know if you have extenuating circumstances, and we can work something out. I am happy to help. *Your tax return price is the cost for me to do your tax return. If I must contact the IRS for ANY reason about your return, there will be a separate fee. This fee is based on the time it takes to resolve the issue.

    Please Note

Tax season and tax planning season are not the same thing. Tax seasons usually take place from February 1st to April 15th and from August 1st to October 15th. In contrast, planning season is any time outside of these periods. If you're thinking about selling a house, switching jobs, launching a business, relocating to another state, adjusting your estimated tax payments, preparing for retirement, or tying the knot (or untangling from it), please reach out to me before tax season so we can discuss and create a strategy. I'm here for you all year and want to stay in the loop. While I do my best to handle things as they arise, my availability and mental energy during filing season are quite limited. You'll receive better guidance and outcomes if we have time to prepare for these changes rather than just reacting at the last minute.

If you need to speak with me, please give me a call, leave me a voice mail, AND follow up with either a text or email. My phone number is 972-295-9025; my email is linda@LMRpractice.com. If I am in the middle of a task, on the phone with the IRS, or with a client, I can better accommodate you by responding in writing. Please don't be offended if I write you back instead of calling. Having said that, if you prefer a phone call, just let me know!

    Election Results and Taxes

Curious about how the election results will impact your return? In short, my thoughts are with Trump back in office and Republicans gaining control of Congress, we will likely see a continuation of the tax reforms established by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. I think it is safe to say the current political landscape may allow the existing tax cuts to remain in effect for the next three years. Regardless of which side of the aisle you sit on, I was not exactly thrilled
about the idea of returning to the personal tax provisions of 2017.

    Beneficial Ownership Information

If you don't know what BOl is all about, please visit the BOl tab on my website. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals sustained an injunction on the FinCen enforcement rule. This means that if you would have had a BOIR filing requirement, you no longer have to file at this time. Although I offer to file this report, this is not a tax filing. No matter if you file it yourself or have me file it for you, if you need to file a BOIR, it is your responsibility to make sure it gets filed. I anticipate future filing deadlines and injunctions before a final say is determined. Please see the BOI tab on my website for the most up to date information.

  • NEW ENTITY QUESTION

Entities such as LLCs, corporations, limited partnerships, and trusts are formed for various purposes including running a business, protecting assets from creditors or estate planning. Most of these entities are required to file a Texas Franchise Tax Return whether the business has any activity or not. Each year, we “discover” the existence of these entities when the client receives Nastygrams from the State of Texas that always includes non-filing penalties.
  • If you have not provided us the formation documents, please email Kathy Phillips at Kathy@MarcLewisTax.com and provide her the name of the entity, its EIN, its purpose, the business the entity is engaged in (if applicable) and attach all formation documents.

  • HOW DO YOU WANT TO FILE YOUR RETURN?

We are required to electronically file your returns unless you specifically request to paper file. You can electronically sign your return by two methods: 1.) Our default method is paperless and employs Docusign. 2.) Our other option is to send you the E-file form at which time you (and your spouse) need to sign, date, and return the form to our office.
