    Hazards exist in many forms. They can be visible or hidden, a condition or an act.  Control of hazards are necessary to ensure the site is safe before you start work. Recognition of hazards is a critical step of any health and safety program.

    Review the posted Project Specific Hazard Assessment at the Safety Station, before starting work on this project.

    You will be required to complete an e-Hazard Assessment (field level hazard assessment), identifying, reporting, and controlling hazards, which must be completed daily, and copies submitted.

    Live Electrical Wires - Although electrical wires should be isolated, do ot assume they are. Always test before working around exposed wiring.

    Public access/site security - including the parking lot as the garbage bin is located in the parking lot

    Manual lifting of equipment -
    ensure correct posture when lifting

    Review the full project specific hazard assessment with a team member posted at the site safety station.

  • Contractor Safety Responsibilities

  • It is the responsibility of ALL to:

    • Complete this site safety orientation prior to commencing work and be familiar with the site evacuation procedures (Initiating an alarm).
    • Follow all safe work practices and/or procedures that are provided.
    • Immediately report to your supervisor any hazardous condition or work practice.
    • Refuse any work assigned that is considered to be unsafe or has the potential to be unsafe.
    • Notify your direct supervisor of any medical condition or limitation that may hinder their ability to safely perform the assigned duties.
    • Immediately report any injury sustained at work to your supervisor and receive first aid or medical help without delay.
    • Report any anticipated loss of working time as a result of a work-related injury to your supervisor as soon as possible.
  • ERP - Initiating an Alarm

  • If an emergency (such as fire) is discovered in the construction zone during operational hours:

    1. Air horns and siren will be activated with three long blasts initiating a complete evacuation.
    2. The area will be evacuated immediately
    3. Emergency response initiated (911)
    4. Site supervisor notified by phone that there is an emergency in the construction zone. 

    A list of First Aiders is posted on the site safety station.

  • ERP - Site Evacuation Procedure

  • On initiating an alarm, all workers must:

    • stop work
    • turn off and make safe all equipment
    • quickly and calmly make your way to the nearest muster point
    • alert others of the situation enroute
    • do not return to the work site until given the all clear by emergency personnel
  • General Site Safety

    1. Wear PPE at ALL TIMES - see next slide
    2. You MUST attend Tool Box Meetings and any other safety meetings. Toolbox meetings required weekly with paperwork turned in Tuesday by 10am.
    3. Good housekeeping in your work area is mandatory. Clean up is required at the end of each day. 
    4. Protective guards must be left in place. Supervisors permission is required to move or block a guard. If you remove a guardrail or fence panel you
      must return it before leaving.
    5. All environmental spills must be immediately reported to your supervisor.
    6. NO smoking on site
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • You must know how to use, inspect before use & maintain all PPE required for each task.

    Minimum PPE for this construction job site that must be worn:

    • steel toed boots
    • hard hat
    • hi-vis vest

    As required and based on task hazard assessment:

    • Eye and ear protection
    • Gloves
    • Fall Protection Equipment is required when working at height
    • Dust masks and respirators
  • Incident Reporting

  • Workers are responsible to report to their site supervisor ALL incidents, and unsafe acts including but not limited to:

    1. unsafe work practices
    2. unsafe work conditions
    3. incidents
    4. occupational illness
    5. near misses
    6. violence and harassment
