  • After reviewing the elective options, select 4 elective courses in order of preference. Every effort will be made to give you your first and second choice of electives, but it is not a guarantee.  Palmetto Middle reserves the rights to place you in an elective of our choice.  

    **Spring State Assessment scores may require enrollment in Intensive Reading in lieu of an elective.**

  • Art 1

  • Want to create art that's truly yours? This course lets you design and build your own 2D projects, expressing your personal style and vision. We'll be diving into creative reading, writing, and listening, all while you're creating amazing artwork. You'll also learn how to give and receive feedback on art, helping you grow as an artist. Get ready to explore your creativity and make some seriously awesome projects!

     

  • Band 1

  • Never played an instrument before? No problem! This class is perfect for beginners. You'll learn the basics of playing a band instrument, read music, and discover the awesome world of band music. We'll cover everything from making cool sounds to taking care of your instrument. Get ready to play with a group, perform some awesome songs, and maybe even show off your skills in a concert! (You might need to get your own instrument, but we can help you figure that out!)

  • Orchestra 1

  • This course will teach you how! You'll develop your skills on an orchestral instrument, join an ensemble, and learn to read music. We'll cover everything from playing techniques to understanding music fundamentals. Get ready to work together, make incredible music, and discover your musical potential!

  • Drama 1

  • This class is all about building characters using your imagination and creativity. We'll be doing fun activities like pantomime and improv, and you'll learn how to make your voice sound awesome on stage. Plus, you'll discover the magic of costumes, props, and scenery. You'll even get to write for the stage and explore different theater roles. Get ready for some cool performances and maybe even some extra rehearsals and shows!

  • Technical Theatre and Design Production

  • Ready to get creative and solve problems behind the scenes? This class dives into the world of technical theater, where you'll learn how to design and build everything from costumes to sets. You'll explore lighting, makeup, props, and sound, and learn how to use theater equipment safely. Get ready to use your imagination and work with a team to bring shows to life. You might even get to participate in some extra rehearsals and shows outside of school!

  • Dance 1

    (Satisfies PE Requirement)
  • This course will help you develop your technique and learn new moves in different dance styles. You'll also learn how to be a respectful and responsible dancer, both in class and during performances. Get ready to work on your problem-solving skills and practice safely in the studio. We'll be working towards some cool performances, and you might even get to dance outside of school! (You'll need some specific dance shoes or clothes, but we can give you some tips!

  • French 1

  • French 1 introduces students to the target language and its culture. Students will learn beginning skills in listening and speaking and an introduction to basic skills in reading and writing. Also, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities are included in this one-year course. 

  • Spanish 1 for Non-Spanish Speakers

  • Spanish 1 introduces students to the target language and its culture. The student will develop communicative skills in all 3 modes of communication and cross-cultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on proficient communication in the language. An introduction to reading and writing is also included as well as culture, connections, comparisons, and communities.

  • Spanish 1 for Spanish Speakers

  • The purpose of this course is to enable students whose heritage language is Spanish to develop, maintain, and enhance proficiency in their heritage language by reinforcing and acquiring skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, including the fundamentals of Spanish grammar. Language Arts Standards are also included in this course to enable students to become literate in the Spanish language and gain a better understanding of the nature of their own language as well as other languages to be acquired. 

  • Research 1

    Forensics Science Lab
  • Ever wanted to explore a topic you're passionate about and find real answers? This class will teach you how to become a mini-researcher! You'll learn how to pick cool topics, ask smart questions, and use research skills to find out more. Get ready to dive deep into a subject you love and create your own research project!

  • Artificial Intelligence 1

  • Ready to dive into the world of robots and smart computers? This class is your chance to learn all about Artificial Intelligence (AI)! We'll explore how machines learn, how computers understand language, and even how they "see" like we do. Get ready for hands-on projects and discover how AI is changing the world around us. This is your chance to learn about the tech of the future!

  • Yearbook

  • The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop fundamental skills in the production of journalism across print, multimedía, web, and broadcast/radio platforms and to become aware of journalism history, careers, ethics use, and management techniques related to the production of journalistic media. Some activities may be required outside of the school day. 

  • Photography

  • This class lets you explore the artistic side of photography, using a mix of digital and traditional techniques. You'll learn how to take great photos, understand composition, and create prints that show off your style. We'll even try out some cool techniques like hand-tinting and cross-processing. Get ready to explore different photography styles, learn how to critique art, and discover your own artistic voice!

  • Physical Education

  • This course will teach you everything you need to know about staying healthy and active. You'll learn how to improve your strength, endurance, and coordination, and discover fun ways to stay fit for life. Get ready to challenge yourself and become a healthier you!

    AUDITION and/or TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED
  • For students with prior theatre experience, this course offers a continued exploration of acting, design, and dramatic literature, enriching both appreciation and practical understanding of theatrical production. We will delve into theatre history, examine the works of prominent American playwrights, and analyze the cultural and historical influences that have shaped theatrical arts. This knowledge will serve to inform and enhance students' practical theatre skills. Students will apply foundational principles of theatre design through hands-on projects and practical application. Public performances will serve as a culminating experience for specific instructional objectives. Participation in rehearsals and performances outside of regular school hours may be required to support, extend, and assess classroom learning.

  • Drama 3

    AUDITION and/or TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED
  • This course builds upon students' existing theatre foundation, fostering continued development of skills and knowledge. Participants will delve into theatre history, examining the works of significant American playwrights and analyzing the cultural and historical influences that have shaped the art form. Practical application of foundational theatre design principles will be emphasized through projects and activities. Public performances may serve as a culminating assessment of specific learning objectives. To further support, extend, and evaluate classroom instruction, participation in rehearsals and performances outside of regular school hours may be required.

  • Drama 4

    AUDITION and/or TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED
  • This course provides students with advanced study in acting, theatre history, and dramatic literature, encompassing the analysis and creation of scenes and plays. Students will synthesize performance and technical theatre skills through collaborative work on diverse classroom and/or school productions. Public performances may serve as a culminating assessment of specific instructional objectives. Participation in rehearsals and performances beyond the regular school day may be required to reinforce, expand, and evaluate classroom learning.

  • Musical Theatre

    AUDITION and/or TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED
  • This course provides students with training in acting, vocal performance, dance/movement, non-dance movement, and staging, all of which are essential for the study of musical theatre literature. Students will examine current trends in musical theatre through the analysis of representative works, and explore the distinct staging and technical requirements of musicals compared to non-musical plays. Public performances may serve as a culminating assessment of specific learning objectives. Participation in rehearsals and performances beyond the regular school day may be required to reinforce, extend, and evaluate classroom learning.

  • Dance 2

    AUDITION and/or TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED
  • This course is designed to provide students with advanced opportunities to expand their knowledge and practical experience in dance movement. Students will focus on developing precise alignment, mastering complex technical skills, engaging in collaborative problem-solving, enhancing dance conditioning, and adhering to safe studio practices. Through research and physical exploration, students will investigate dance within its cultural and historical contexts, analyze exemplary modern works, and cultivate dance as a lifelong healthy skill. They will also learn to utilize appropriate dance terminology to articulate the expressive and aesthetic qualities of performance. Public performances may serve as a culminating assessment of specific instructional objectives. Participation in rehearsals and performances beyond the regular school day may be required to reinforce, extend, and evaluate classroom learning. Students in this course may be required to acquire appropriate footwear and/or dance attire from an external source.

    AUDITION and/or TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED
  • This course offers students the opportunity to explore two distinct dance styles. Participants will develop technical and creative skills related to choreographic structure, performance, dance science, and somatic movement practices. Emphasis will be placed on alignment, collaborative problem-solving, dance conditioning, and safe studio practices. Public performances may serve as a culminating assessment of specific learning objectives. Participation in rehearsals and performances beyond the regular school day may be required to reinforce, extend, and evaluate classroom learning.   • This course is designed to provide students with rich musical experiences through the performance of diverse band literature. The curriculum will encompass, but is not limited to, the performance of medium-level literature and the comprehensive interpretation of various musical styles and forms.

  • This course is designed to provide students with rich musical experiences through the performance of diverse band literature. The curriculum will encompass, but is not limited to, the performance of medium to moderately difficult literature, and the comprehensive interpretation of various musical styles and forms.

    AUDITION and/or TEACHER RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED
  • Ever wanted to be the mastermind behind the screen? Forget just watching TV, in this class, you'll be making it! We're talking lights, cameras, action—the whole shebang. You'll learn how to wrangle a camera like a pro, edit videos that'll make your friends say "whoa," and even cook up your own mini-shows. Imagine: brainstorming hilarious skits, interviewing your favorite teachers (or maybe even pranking them, just kidding... mostly), and seeing your creations come to life on screen. It's like having your own mini-studio, where you get to call the shots and unleash your inner Spielberg. Get ready for a wild ride of creativity, teamwork, and maybe a few bloopers along the way!
