Leadership Position Descriptions
Upper Chamber Presider - Leads and presides in Upper House or Senate. Presiding experience required.
Premier Chamber Presider - Leads and presides in Premier House or Senate. Presiding or other leadership experience strongly preferred.
Upper Chamber Party Leader - Helps lead Upper House or Senate, represents the viewpoint of a political party on offered legislation, promotes substantive debate in the chamber, works to form coalitions in the chamber to pass certain legislation, given speaking priority once per session. Outstanding speaking and statemanlike abilities required. May work with party leaders or Youth Governor/Governor's Staff to write and introduce legislation not addressed by delegate-sponsored bills.
Premier Chamber Floor Leader - Helps lead Premier House or Senate, helps first year students understand parlimentary procedure, promotes substantive debate in the chamber, given speaking priority once per session. Outstanding speaking and statemanlike abilities required.
Committee Chair - Leads and presides over a committee. Previous presiding or leadership experience preferred.
Committee Co-chair - Helps lead and preside over a committee
Clerk - Manages the administration of a chamber (maintains the docket, manages and signs the offical bills, keeps time for debate, reads the bill to the chamber when called for). Strong leadership and management skills required.
Governor's Staff - Helps the Governor write their platform, represents the interests of the Governor in committees, advises the Governor of the implications of passed legislation and what action they shouldtake on the legislation. Staff must be willing to represent the Youth Governor's legislative agenda even if it does not align with their own personal political beliefs.
Deputy Secretary of State - Aids the Secretary of State in supervising campaigns and carrying out elections. Strong leadership, organizing, and multi-tasking abilities required. May not be a candidate for an elected position.
Social Media Editors-in-Chief - Works with YIG Staff and leadership to manage YIG social media accounts. Must attend training in the spring. Promotes YIG and other events and activities through YIG Instagram, Twitter and other approved social media accounts. This position is a multi-month position, with work starting in late spring and continuing through the November conference. At the conference, Social Media Editors-in-Chief work with News Media Editors-in-Chief and staff to integrate conference news into social media and other platforms. Must be creative and passionate about the mission of the Y and Youth in Government.
News Editor-in-Chief - Manages and directs conference media staff to ensure vibrant and professional news and features covering all aspects of conference. Works with Social Media Editors-in-Chief to integrate news coverage into social media platforms. Must have experience or understanding of news, features, and how to use photography, video and writing to create engaging news content.
Lobbyist - Requires previous YIG experience. Lobbyists will be assigned to lobbying firms, and will work together to determine which legislation they will lobby for or against. Lobbyists speak in committees but not in chambers. Once committees have adjourned at the end of the first day of the legislative session lobbyists will work with political parties, the Youth Governor's staff, and legislators to pass or defeat legislation. The lobbyist position requires a high level of independence and self-direction, and requires approval from advisors. Up to 15 lobbyists will be selected.
