    Scholarship Fund Application

  • Founded in 2013, the Jerome Alston Memorial (JAM) Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports education, health & wellness, and asthma awareness. This support has been evidenced through partnerships with local schools to educate students on asthma triggers and 5k runs to support asthma awareness and raise funds for scholarships.

Jerome Alston, a son, father, brother, and friend, was raised in the Berkley neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia as the oldest of four children. He attended Lake Taylor High School and matriculated through Virginia State University. He became an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated where he participated in many community service events and programs which benefitted the community. After working in a corporate setting, he decided to shift his focused to helping the youth. He became a science teacher at Madison Alternative Center and later Cradock Middle School. While being the structure and role model some students needed he also became a mentor to students by teaching them how to tie neckties, beating them in his favorite pastime - basketball-, and volunteering to coach the volleyball team. He left an indelible impression on the hearts and lives of many people and students he encountered. Jerome's untimely passing on December 18, 2012 due to asthma related complications left a hole in many hearts which could not be filled. The Jerome Alston Memorial Foundation was established to keep Jerome's legacy alive.

The purpose of the Jerome Alston Memorial Foundation Scholarship Fund is to identify high school seniors and undergraduate college students who possess qualities shared by Jerome Alston during his life. Some of these include a desire for academic excellence, leadership positions in student or community organizations, pursuit of the STEM field, tackling asthma, and membership in a fraternity.

The Jerome Alston Memorial Foundation Scholarship Fund endeavors to make one award for each of the four scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 each.
