  • Redistributing Resources, Not Just Opportunities

In 2025, I made a commitment to redistribute the prize money I received through the National Indigenous Fashion Awards directly back into our communities. After some time away from work due to hardship, we are back with a clear mind and heart. Our commitment isn’t a one-off gesture but a hope for change. It was a reflection of how I was raised and what I believe: when one of us is given access to resources, we have a responsibility to create pathways for others. Over the past year, funds have been redistributed to support First Nations fashion. $2000 has been utilised on Fashion workshop equipment and recourses to skill share with currently $3000 remaining in the fund, which will continue to be allocated to Blak designers who need practical support to pursue opportunities, develop collections, access materials, travel, or grow their practice.Moving forward, I am expanding this commitment. I aim to donate a percentage of each sales from my fashion label which will be set aside throughout the year to build a larger community fund, with distributions taking place annually. This initiative is grounded in trust, reciprocity and collective growth. It is not tied to government funding, reporting burdens, social media metrics. There are enough systems asking our mob to prove their worth. I am more interested in supporting talent, vision and potential wherever it exists as I struggle myself in the space and can only aim to lighten the load for mob in the same position as me. We know there is no shortage of brilliance in our communities. What often stands in the way is access to resources, equipment, materials, travel, time, and financial support. My hope is that this fund can provide a small but meaningful contribution to changing that. As this initiative grows, I look forward to continuing to invest in Blak futures, Blak creativity, and the self-determination of our fashion and arts sectors. If there are any designers or businesses who would like to commit to this fund alongside me please reach out at info@lillardia.com
