  • Call for Artists! Disabled Women Make History (And Art)

  • Disability EmpowHer Network and the Toledo Museum of Art proud to host Disabled Women Make History (and Art), a workshop and art show celebrating disabled women on May 17, 2025!

We invite women* with disabilities to submit their art for consideration to be displayed as part of this unique event. We will select a total of 20 artists for the in-person event, with the possibility of additional artists being selected for a virtual component of the show. Artists selected will be invited to display their work at this event and receive admission to two exclusive workshops to enhance their skills in marketing themselves and their artwork.

At this time, the art show is primarily focused on a tri-state regional audience and resources to support artist travel is limited. Preference will be given to artists currently residing in Ohio, NE Indiana, and SE Michigan. Artists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to apply.**

*Transgender women, cisgender women, assigned female at birth, and feminine-aligned people.

    **One submission per artist, please.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 11:59pm on March 17th

If you have any questions, please feel free to email event organizers, Katie Shelley and Sophie Poost at KShelley@toledomuseum.org or sophie@disabilityempowhernetwork.org

  • Note about event space: Disabled Women Make History (and Art) will be taking place in Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion- which is an enclosed space primarily made of curved glass walls. The pieces will be primarily displayed on easels and pedestals (which we will provide) in the main hallway of the building. If your art requires a different means of display, please let us know so we can plan accordingly. Space is limited so we will likely not be able to accommodate especially large displays with multiple components.

Image description: photo of a woman standing in front of a bench where three other people are sitting. They are in a hallway with glasswalls and art sits on easels spaced out around the hallway. A woman in bright red pants stands and talks to a group of people sitting on a bench in front of her. They are in a long corridor with glass walls, and art is displayed on easels on either side of them.

  • We prefer the piece of art you submit references your lived experience with disability in some way, however we will consider all artwork submitted.

  • EVENT DETAILS:

The art show will be held on Saturday, May 17th, 2024 at the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion from 6-8pm ET.

The two exclusive workshops for the selected artists will take place on Saturday, May 17th from 10am-2pm ET in the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion.

Please note that due to the nature of the space and the active engagement of artists and attendees, the space can become loud and some may find the event overstimulating. We can offer a quiet space for those who may need it. We also have masks, earplugs, and other sensory tools available at the event.

    The workshops are:

    1. Know Your ArtWorth

Creating and sharing art with the community is the first step in changing your hobby into a source of income, but for some artists it can be hard to take the leap when they’re unsure of their art’s worth. This workshop is designed to help resolve this dilemma for beginning artists. In Know Your ArtWorth, participants will receive insight and advice on pricing and negotiating the sale of their artwork. Every artist deserves to be paid for their materials, time, effort, and unique vision and through this workshop they will know just how to make that happen.

    2. The Art of Public Speaking

The Art of Public Speaking provides artists with techniques and tools to strengthen their public speaking skills. Participants will be invited to practice communicating about the background and meaning of their art and receive feedback and support in improving their ability to do so in a safe and collaborative environment. This interactive workshop will leave every artist confident in their ability to share the message and story of their artwork with anyone who asks.
