  • Recording Guidelines

    • Anyone recording Southdown sheep must pay membership dues. If the recorder is 21 or younger as of Jan. 1 of the recording year they qualify for junior membership.
    • All registered Southdowns must have permanent identification that corresponds to the certificate of registration. It can be a combination of letters and numbers. For example, a breeder may wish to use his name or initials or his farm name or initials along with the individiual animal number. Each animal must have a different identification number.
    • Names will only be included on the registration certificate if the $50 christening fee is paid.
    • The owner of the dam at the time of lambing will be the owner of the lamb on the registration certificate. New ownership will be reflected on the back of the certificate by transfer.
    • If the animal being registered needs to be in someone else's name, a transfer must occur. The recorder should fill in the date of sale and name of new owner. Transfer fees must be paid. This applies even if the change in ownership is within the same family.
    • All Southdown sheep born and subsequently registered after December 31, 2023 warrant the DNA genetics to be free of the spider gene, hairy lamb gene, callipyge gene and the dwarfism gene.
    • Any registered Southdown with disqualification traits shall have its and its progeny’s registration rescinded. Disqualification traits are: Scrotal rupture, one or both testicles not descending, Ectodermal Dysplasia (Hairy Lamb), Hereditary Chondrodysplasia (spider lamb), Calligype lambs, dwarf lambs and Black Sheep.
    • A semen transfer and Artificial Insemination Declaration must accompany any registration for lambs born by Artificial Insemination (AI). The Artificial Insemination Declaration is on page 3 of this form or can be found on the ASBA website. The owner of the semen signs or submits the semen transfer certificate. If the owner of the dam also owns the semen, a semen transfer is not necessary.
    • A semen transfer and Embryo Transfer Declaration must accompany any registration for lambs born by Embryo Transfer (ET). The Embryo Transfer Declaration is on page 4 of this form or can be found on the ASBA website. The owner of the semen signs or submits the semen transfer certificate. If the owner of the dam also owns the semen, a semen transfer is not necessary.
    • A certificate of service must accompany any registration for lambs born by live cover of a ram not owned by the owner of the dam. The owner of the ram signs the certificate of service.
