  • Music’s Transformative Power: A Phenomenological Exploration of Christian Music’s Role in Enhancing Human Development

    Invitation to be part of a research study

    You are invited to participate in a research study. To participate, you must be:

    1.     Must be between the ages of 30-75
    2.     Must have at least ten years of experience singing, listening, or playing music
    3.     Must have at least one testimony of how Christian music transformed their life in some way, either physical, cognitive, social or mental health transformation.


    Taking part in this research project is voluntary. Please take time to read this entire form and ask questions before deciding whether to take part in this research.

    Introduction - The phenomenon under study is to examine the lived experience of Christian music in the lives of Christian adults and its transformative power over their lifetime as well as sharing the transformative healing attributes Christian music has had on others which whom they have been closely associated. Experience can include Singing, listening and playing Christian music. This study hopes to show that Christian music can be used as a therapeutic component for physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual healing and growth.

    Purpose of Research - This study hopes to show that Christian music can be used as a therapeutic component for physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual healing and growth.

    What will happen if you take part in thei study? -

     If you agree to be in this study, I will ask you to do the following:
    1.     The first task during the interview, the researcher will ask participant to fill out a demographic questionnaire before the start of the audio recording of interview.
    2.     The second task will be to turn on the audio recorder and begin with interview questions. The interview will take between 60 and 90 minutes.
    3.     After interviewing is complete, the researcher will review the participants demeaner to ensure participant is at no immediate risk or having emotional distress.
    4.     After the completion of the interviews, the participants will be given a thank you letter and invited to a debriefing of the write up of themes.

    Benefits - Participants should not expect to receive a direct benefit from taking part in this study. Benefits to society include knowing that “Christian Music” can help one with mental health, social health, cognitive health and physical health.

    Risks? - Expected risks from participating in this study are minimal, which means they are equal to the risks you would encounter in everyday life. The risks involved in this study include the possibility of psychological stress from being asked to recall and discuss prior trauma. To reduce risk, I will monitor participants, discontinue the interview if necessary, and provide referral information for counseling services.
     
     I am a mandatory reporter. During this study, if I receive information about child abuse, child neglect, elder abuse, or intent to harm self or others, I will be required to report it to the appropriate authorities.

    Confidentiality -  The records of this study will be kept private. Published reports will not include any information that will make it possible to identify a subject. Research records will be stored securely, and only the researcher[s] will have access to the records.
     
    ·      Participant responses will be kept confidential by replacing names with pseudonyms.
    ·      Interviews will be conducted in a location where others will not easily overhear the conversation.
    ·      Data will be stored on a password-locked computer/in a locked room and may be used for future writings. After three years, all electronic records will be deleted
    ·      Interviews will be recorded and transcribed. Recordings will be stored on password locked computer for three years and then deleted. The researcher will have access to these recordings during that time.

    Compensation - Participants will not be compensated for participating in this study.

    Is study particpation voluntary? - Participation in this study is voluntary. Your decision whether to participate will not affect your current or future relations with Liberty University. If you decide to participate, you are free to not answer any question or withdraw at any timewithout affecting those relationships. 

    What happens if I decide to withdraw from the study? - If you choose to withdraw from the study, please contact the researcher at the email/phone/address included in the next paragraph. Your responses will not be recorded or included in the study.
