The Journal of Hospital Medicine (JHM) Editorial Fellowship is designed to formally introduce Chief Residents, Hospital Medicine Fellows, and junior faculty (e.g., Assistant Professor) to the peer review, editorial, and academic writing process. Recognizing that there are few formal occasions to acquire experiences with these activities, JHM has created a one-year editorial fellowship designed to close this opportunity gap. The overall purpose of this program is to provide experiences that will enhance the Fellows’ career in academic hospital medicine and scientific publication, while developing their skills and enhancing social and professional networks that could lead to future participation as a peer reviewer or editor at a scientific journal.
Each Fellow will be paired with a editorial mentor, who is a current JHM Deputy or Associate Editor. Structured as a distance-learning program, the fellowship allows the Fellow to continue their local clinical and professional responsibilities while still allowing them the opportunity to work with a national leader in hospital medicine. Regular communication and interactions take place through telephone calls, emails, and videoconferencing. Attempts are made to pair the Fellow with mentors who have similar interests and/or background.
Each academic year, 3-5 candidates are chosen. Ideal candidates will desire a career in academic hospital medicine with an interest in any of the following: medical education, quality improvement, public policy, or clinical research. Candidates should be able to highlight projects, programs, curricula, or research that illustrates their dedication and desire to remain in hospital medicine. While not mandatory, candidates with previous authorship or publications are preferred. Because of the distance-learning structure, candidates should be self-motivated and be able to work independently.
By working closely with the JHM editorial staff, it is the hope that participation in this program will assist in the growth, development, and sustainable advancement of individuals’ hospital medicine career.
Fellow Responsibilities
- Perform peer review on submitted manuscripts. Guided by their mentor, each Fellow will complete 6 peer-reviews (one every two months) over the course of the academic year.
- Compose editorial content. Working closely with their mentor, each Fellow will publish 1-2 editorials in JHM. Attempts will be made so that this article will be chosen based off of either the Fellow or Mentors’ area of expertise and/or interest. Additionally, the Journal may offer opportunities to compose a ‘Perspective in Hospital Medicine’ with either their mentor or another leader in hospital medicine.
- Participate in bi-monthly editorial staff meetings. Every two weeks, the editorial staff holds a one-hour meeting to review upcoming articles and other business related to running the journal.
- Attend fellows videoconferences, including orientation sessions in July and August and quarterly professional development sessions. Previous topics have included: “Running an Academic Journal”, “How to Write an Editorial”, “How to Be a Good Writer”, and “Mentorship & Sponsorship in Academic Medicine”.
